LEEAHN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Jennifer Steinkamp, (b.1958~ Lives and works in Los Angeles) on view from May1 to June 21, 2014.Steinkamp has been working in digital media for the past 20 years and is recognized as a pioneer in the field of 3D animation. Expressing natural phenomenon and movements using digital rendering and applying them to architectural surroundings, the artist has been continuing her exploration on how light creates space and its scale and how it changes awareness of space. This exhibition will feature her new works, ‘Diaspore’ and 'Ronnie Reagan' using the architectural structure of LEEAHN Gallery Seoul.

‘Diaspore’ one of the projections installed in the main gallery space depicts a collection of tumbleweeds that breaks off from its roots at the end of its life and then blows around on the ground. This contains the structure of plants spreading seeds and spores, and Diaspore in the social phenomenon, at the same time. Diaspore, a Greek word for ‘dispersed people’ or ‘separation’, means a community which has repeated a shift in generations, maintaining its identity and ethnicity all over the world. Based on the connection between human and plants spreading ethnic cultures and seeds throughout the world, the artist is drawing a link between the natural world and human society.

‘Ronnie Reagan’ was inspired by the anecdote of the former U.S. president, Ronald Reagan. According to the writing about his eyesight which the artist found in his medical history, Reagan would have to sit in the front row in class to see and sometimes got hit in the head with the ball while playing sports as he could not see. Before he turned 10, he was already diagnosed with nearsightedness. Reagan later said that when he got glasses, he was surprised to discover that trees had leaves and that butterflies existed. From a phenomenological point of view, this video presents what ‘See’ means, and encourages the change in insight of space and object. The artist’s installation which displays a constant exploration on space, insight and digital simulation of the natural world, catches the eyes of the viewers between the physical space and the virtual space formed by light, as a little child keeps his eyes on a living butterfly.

Jennifer Steinkamp was born in Denver, U.S.A. in 1965 and graduated from California Institute (Cal Arts) and Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. At the time she was studying motion graphics in Cal Arts in 1984, she was influenced by the West coast art scene that was in vogue around the west coast of the U.S. This includes the ‘Light and Space movement’ that belonged to installation art using light, and the next generation of artists experimenting with art and technology. Using computer animation and new media, Steinkamp is working on large-scale animation projects to create a new perspective of architectural structure.

Her work is included in numerous public and private collections internationally, including The Chrysler Museum of Art, Virginia; Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga, Spain; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Istanbul Museum, Turkey; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She introduced her works to Korean viewers by participating in Media City Seoul in 2002 and Gwangju Biennale in 2004.The artist gained international attention for the ‘Eye Catching’ in the 8th Istanbul Biennale in 2013 and was invited to the 11st Cairo International Biennale in 2008.

리안갤러리 서울은 2014년 5월 1일에서 오는 6월 21일까지 미국출신 영상미디어 설치작가 제니퍼 스타인캠프(Jennifer Steinkamp, b.1958~ Lives and works in Los Angeles) 의 두 번째 국내 개인전을 마련합니다. 스타인캠프는 지난 20여 년간 디지털 미디어를 이용해 작업을 해왔으며, 3D 애니메이션의 분야의 개척자로 평가 받고 있습니다. 자연 현상과 움직임을 디지털 랜더링으로 구현해 이를 건축 공간에 적용하는 작가는 빛이 공간과 그 규모를 어떻게 창조하고 공간에 대한 인식을 바꾸어 놓는가에 대한 탐구를 이어오고 있습니다. 이번 전시에서 그녀는 리안갤러리 서울의 건축적 구조를 활용한 신작 ‘디아스포라’ Diaspore 와 ‘로니 레이건 2 ’ Ronnie Reagan 2 을 선보입니다.

지하 1 층에 설치된 영상 ‘디아스포라’는 줄기 밑동에서 떨어져 나온 식물이 바람에 흩날리다 다발을 이루는 이미지를 묘사하고 있습니다. 이는 씨앗과 포자를 퍼트리는 식물의 구조를 담는 동시에 사회 현상 안에서의 디아스포라를 함께 내포하고 있습니다. 그리스어로 ‘흩어진 사람들’ 또는 ‘이산’을 뜻하는 디아스포라는 현대에서는 본토를 떠나 전 세계 각지에 흩어져 자신의 정체성과 민족성을 상실하지 않고 세대교체를 반복해 온 공동체를 의미합니다. 작가는 전세계에 걸친 민족과 문화의 전파와 씨앗을 퍼트리는 식물 사이에서 연관성을 찾고, 이를 통해 자연계와 인간사회의 연결고리를 그리고 있습니다.

갤러리 1층에 설치된 영상 ‘로니 레이건’ 은 작가가 미 전 대통령인 로널드 레이건 Ronald Reagan 의 일화에서 영감을 얻은 작품입니다. 작가는 레이건의 의료기록에서 그의 시력에 관한 글을 읽을 수 있었는데, 어린 시절 시력이 좋지 않은 레이건은 수업시간에 언제나 교실 맨 앞줄에 앉아야만 했고 운동을 할 때는 종종 공을 머리에 맞곤 했습니다. 열 살이 채 되기 전에 근시 진단을 받은 그는 훗날, 안경을 처음 꼈을 때 나무에 잎이 달려있고, 나비가 존재한다는 걸 알게 되었을 때 너무나 놀라웠다고 회상했습니다. 영상은 현상학적 측면에서 ‘본다’는 의미가 무엇인지 제시하고, 공간과 사물에 대한 통찰을 바꾸어 놓고자 유도합니다. 공간과 시각 그리고 자연계의 디지털 시뮬레이션에 대한 끊임없는 탐구를 제시하는 작가의 영상 속 화면은 마치 살아 존재하는 나비에서 눈을 떼지 못하듯, 물리적 공간과 빛으로 남은 가상의 공간 사이에서 관람객의 시선을 멈추게 합니다.

제니퍼 스타인캠프는 1958년 미국 덴버 출신으로, 캘리포니아 인스티튜트 (칼아츠 CalArts) 와 패서디나 아트 센터 (Art Center College of Design, Pasadena)를 졸업했습니다. 1984년 칼 아츠에서 모션 그래픽을 수학하던 시기, 그녀는 미 서부해안을 중심으로 성행한 웨스트코스트 아트 신 West Coast art scene 에 영향을 받았는데, 이는 빛을 이용한 설치 위주의 미술 경향을 일컫는 ‘라이트 앤드 스페이스 무브먼트’ Light and Space movement 와 이후 예술과 기술의 접목을 실험하는 작가세대를 포함합니다. 컴퓨터 애니메이션과 뉴 미디어를 이용하는 스타인캠프는 대규모 스케일의 애니메이션 프로젝트 작업을 통해 건축 구조에 대한 새로운 관점을 창조해내고 있으며, 작품은 미국을 중심으로 전세계 주요 미술관; 로스앤젤리스 카운티 미술관, 마이애미 현대 미술관, 산호세 미술관, 이스탄불 현대미술관, 미니아폴리스 아트 인스티튜트, 버지니아 크라이슬러 박물관, 휴스턴 미술관, 일본 타와타 아트센터 등에 소장되어 있습니다. 국내에는 아모레 퍼시픽 미술관과 SK HUB, 대구미술관, 제주 본태 박물관 등에 소장되어 있고, 2002년 미디어시티 서울, 2004년 광주비엔날레에 참가하여 국내에 자신의 작품을 소개한 바 있습니다. 작가는 2003년 제8회 이스탄불 비엔날레에서 발표한 ‘Eye Catching’ 으로 세계적인 주목을 받았으며 2008년 제1회 카이로 국제 비엔날레에 초대된 바 있습니다.
