From 15 March to 29 April 2017, the Leeahn Gallery, Seoul, will hold a solo exhibition by Turi Simeti (Alcamo, 1929~). With the cooperation of the Almine Rech Gallery, the exhibition will feature both paintings and sculptures.

Simeti began his creative career as a self-taught artist powerfully nurtured by his frequent contacts with intellectual circles in Rome, where he met major artists and internationally renowned art critics who influenced his development and were instrumental in bringing about his recognition as a distinguished figure in the history of art. Simeti’s oval shapes and the relationship between form and space, the balance between form and colour and, underlying it all, the inspiring presence of Sicily, to which he returned to work in the open air, are the bedrock of his constantly evolving creative output.”

The peculiarity of the work of Simeti is to be found beyond the painting, in the fluid energy which is made to flow by the projection of the shade on the stretched surfaces, so as to exalt a meditative and silent space which that energy appropriates and retransmits to the world in a natural and simple way.

Turi Simeti grazes, with his agile way of negotiating the physical limits of the painting and the perceptive ones of the spectator, the intangibility and impossibility to represent things, the possibility of representing the void, the disowning of completeness in favour of a mobile asymmetry which displaces the harmony of proportions, assuming the risk of carrying his artistic adventure beyond the Pillars of Hercules of visibility.

If we consider the development of the works as a whole rather than a single canvas, from the very first to the one which is being prepared in this moment in the Milanese atelier of the artist, what appears before our eyes is a powerful and inexpressible vision, shrouded by the dance of lights and shades which make the ovals vibrate, as they press against the canvas, as if wanting to get out of the limited space of the painting, to force the limits of the skin of painting containing them.

Simeti’s works, which continue to vary infinitely, to renew themselves from within and to remain open to the change induced from without, renounce a compulsive definition where the physiological eye would not suffice, willingly allowing themselves to be destabilized by a margin of changeability; they enter another space, forcing an opening which is normally precluded; they say without nominating, show without revealing, create a form of intelligible but intangible beauty which inexorably remains evasive, precarious and veiled by those very same mobile shades created by the refraction of light on the projecting oval outlines.

Born in Alcamo, Sicily, in 1929, Turi Simeti currently lives and works in Milan. In 1958 he moved to Rome, where he first came into contact with the world of art. During subsequent stays in London, Paris, Basel and New York, he became acquainted with the artistic avant-garde of his time and joined the increasingly strong movement to break completely with traditional paradigms and pre-established codes. Within the framework of this rigorous reductionist drive, his language acquired individual distinctiveness through the use of monochromaticity and relief as almost exclusive compositional procedures. This led to the emergence of the ellipse, which eventually became the artist’s hallmark, the shape which epitomises the sentiment around which even today his creative process unfolds and develops.

Works by Turi Simeti are held in major public and private collections worldwide, including those of the Prada Foundation, Milan; the Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Turin; the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Museion), Bolzano; the Museum of the 20th Century, Milan; the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro; the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg, Denmark; the Schaufler Foundation, Sindelfingen, Germany; and the Voorlinden Museum, Wassenar, Netherlands.


리안갤러리 서울에서는 2017년 3월 15일부터 4월 29일까지 이탈리아 모노크롬 회화의 대가 투리 시메티(Turi Simeti, 1929~현재)의 개인전이 열린다. 국내에서 처음으로 열리는 투리 시메티의 이번 전시는 그의 1950년대 말부터 꾸준히 이어져 온 작업 중 2014년 이후의 대표적 신작인 회화와 조각으로 구성되었다. 캔버스 전면을 하나의 색으로 구성한 투리 시메티의 작업은 한국의 단색화와는 또 다른 1960년대부터 시도 된 이탈리아 모노크롬 회화의 다양한 가능성을 살펴 볼 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다.


투리 시메티의 회화에서는 평면의 화면을 넘어선 것들이 발견된다. 보이지 않는 타원형의 무언가가 캔버스에 변형을 일으키고 평평했던 화면에는 굴곡이 생겨난다. 자칫 단조로울 수 있었던 단색의 전면에는 빛의 방향에 따라 그림자가 드리워지며 하나의 색은 다양하게 변화하기 시작한다. 부드럽게 흐르는 듯 하면서도 팽팽하게 당겨지는 굴곡에서는 긴장감마저 느껴진다. 전형적인 캔버스 그림에 익숙한 관람자들에게 다양한 질문을 던지는 듯한 투리 시메티의 작업은 그가 1950년대 말부터 이어온 회화의 역사를 담고 있다.

투리 시메티는 1929년 이탈리아 시실리 알카모에서 태어나 현재까지 밀라노에 거주하며 작업 활동을 이어나가고 있다. 1958년 로마로 이주한 그는 그 곳에서 처음으로 미술을 접하게 되고 작업을 시작하였다. 로마에서 앙포르멜의 대가 알베르토 부리(Alberto Burri, 1915~1995)와 교류하며 독학으로 미술을 배워 나간 투리 시메티는 앙포르멜 꼴라주 작업을 시작으로 점차 자신만의 예술적 언어를 찾아나갔다.

그 후 그는 런던, 파리, 바젤, 뉴욕 등에서 거주하며 당대의 다양한 예술을 접하게 된다. 투리 시메티에게 이러한 시간은 회화의 전통적 패러다임을 완전히 무너트리는 전위적 예술 실험을 통하여 적극적으로 아방가르드 예술운동에 참여할 수 있는 기회가 되었다. 작가는 1960년대 유럽 전역에서 활발히 활동한 전위 예술 그룹, ‘Zero Avant-garde Group’ 의 일원으로 루치오 폰타나(Lucio Fonatana, 1899~1968), 피에로 만조니(Piero Manzoni, 1933~1963) 등과 함께 캔버스 화면에 대한 도전적 실험을 선보이며 새로운 모노크롬 회화의 가능성을 열었다. 이러한 작업들을 거치며 그의 작업에서 나타나는 타원형의 형태는 작가의 트레이드 마크가 되었다. 그의 타원 형태에 대한 탐구와 이와 함께 만들어지는 캔버스 화면에 대한 창의적 작업들은 오늘날까지도 계속되고 있으며 발전되고 있다.

앙포르멜이 전후 시대의 인간의 실존에 대한 문제를 제기하였듯이, 투리 시메티는 초기 앙포르멜작업의 영향을 이어받아 실존에 대한 고민을 자신만의 발전 된 언어로 풀어나간다. 그의 작업은 비가시적인 대상의 존재를 나타냄으로써 존재의 인식에 대한 철학적 사유를 가능하게 한다. 그의 작품을 보고 있노라면 캔버스 화면 위에는 색 외에 그 어떤 것도 발견 되지 않는다. 그러나, 이내 보이지 않는 무언가가 캔버스 뒷면에서 자신의 존재를 슬며시 드러내고 있음을 알아차린다. 보이지 않는 대상의 존재가 느껴질 때 혹은 감각된 존재의 부재를 깨달을 때, 우리의 감각은 흔들리고 그것에 더욱더 집중한다. 이렇듯 그의 작업은 사물을 비물질화 시킴으로 오히려 그 존재를 강하게 지각할 수 있게 한다. 가령 캔버스 화면 위에 타원이 있었다면 이렇게까지 그 대상이 궁금하고 주목되진 않았을 것이다. 대상의 부재 또는 비가시적 존재 등에 대한 투리 시메티의 질문은 이렇게 그의 작품 안에서 탐구되고 표현되고 있다.

60년 가량 이어진 투리 시메티의 화업은 89세가 된 2017년 오늘에도 열정적으로 펼쳐지고 있다. 현재 그의 작품은 밀라노 프라다(Prada) 재단, 투린 근현대 시민 갤러리, 볼자노 근현대 미술관, 밀라노 20세기 미술관, 덴마크 현대 미술관, 독일 Schaufler 재단, 네덜란드 볼린덴 미술관 등에 소장되어 있으며 그 외 다수 개인 콜렉터들에게 소장되어 있다.
