Biography

Turi Simeti was born in Alcamo, Sicily, in 1929, and currently lives and works in Milan. In Turi Simeti's paintings, elements that transcend the flat surface are discovered. Invisible elliptical entities cause transformations on the canvas, creating undulations on what was once a flat surface. Shadows are cast on the otherwise monotonous single-color foreground depending on the direction of light, causing a single color to begin varying. The folds, seemingly flowing softly yet tightly drawn, evoke tension. Turi Simeti's work, which throws various questions to spectators familiar with typical canvas paintings, encapsulates the history of painting he has been continuing since the late 1950s.

 

투리 시메티는 1929년 이탈리아 시실리 알카모에서 태어나 현재까지 밀라노에 거주하며 작업 활동을 이어나가고 있다. 투리 시메티의 회화에서는 평면의 화면을 넘어선 것들이 발견된다. 보이지 않는 타원형의 무언가가 캔버스에 변형을 일으키고 평평했던 화면에는 굴곡이 생겨난다. 자칫 단조로울 수 있었던 단색의 전면에는 빛의 방향에 따라 그림자가 드리워지며 하나의 색은 다양하게 변화하기 시작한다. 부드럽게 흐르는 듯 하면서도 팽팽하게 당겨지는 굴곡에서는 긴장감마저 느껴진다. 전형적인 캔버스 그림에 익숙한 관람자들에게 다양한 질문을 던지는 듯한 투리 시메티의 작업은 그가 1950년대 말부터 이어온 회화의 역사를 담고 있다
