Woohyun Shim was born in 1987, majored in painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, completed a graduate program in fine arts at the University of Pennsylvania, and received a Ph.D. in Western Painting from Ewha Womans University. For the artist, "the forest" has been a source of artistic inspiration, from the ancestral forest in Paju frequently visited during childhood to the nearby hills enjoyed as an adult. Fragments of visual, tactile, and auditory experiences from various forests the artist has encountered from childhood to the present are impulsively, immediately, and energetically traversed and juxtaposed across the canvas space, bursting forth from the depths of the artist's unconscious. The artist has said, "I traverse the pictorial space as if walking through a forest," describing the act of painting as a process of imparting a new unique order to each canvas.
심우현은 1987년 태어나 시카고 아트 인스티튜트에서 페인팅과 드로잉을 전공하고, 펜실베니아 대학원에서 순수미술을 전공한 후 이화여자대학교 서양화과 박사과정을 졸업했다. 어린 시절부터 빈번히 드나들던 파주 선산이나 성인이 된 후 즐겨 찾는 집 근처 뒷산까지 작가에게 ‘숲’은 예술적 영감의 원천이다. 작가가 어린 시절부터 현재까지 여러 숲에서 경험한 시각, 촉각, 청각 경험의 편린들이 작가의 무의식의 폐부로부터 분출된 에너지의 힘으로 순간적, 즉각적, 충동적으로 한 화면의 캔버스 공간을 가로지르며 유입되고 병치된다. 실제로 작가는 “나는 회화적 공간을 숲을 거닐 듯이 가로지른다”고 했으며, 페인팅 행위는 각 캔버스마다 새로운 고유의 질서를 부여해 나가는 과정이라고 설명한다.
