A collection of works from world-renowned Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama will be displayed at Hong Kong’s M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture. The exhibition will be held in line with the museum's first anniversary celebrations.
'Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now' will feature over 200 pieces created by the 93-year-old visionary artist and will run from November 12, 2022, to May 14, 2023. The show marks the largest retrospective of the queen of resilience in Asia outside Japan, offering locally-based fans and art lovers an unprecedented opportunity to view works even from the artist’s own collection.
The exhibition will also debut three new works titled ‘Death of Nerves’, ‘Dots Obsession—Aspiring to Heaven’s Love’, and ‘Pumpkin’ which were all released in 2022.
Since moving to New York City in 1958, Kusama’s name and trademark polka dots art, pumpkins and infinity mirrors have become an important part of the New York avant-garde scene. Her paintings, sculptures, performances, moving images and large-scale installations have made her one of the most influential Asian artists in history.
“Yayoi Kusama is one of the most influential and inspiring artists of our time. Her Asian roots, transnational history, as well as her singular artistic language and philosophy that she has developed from the 1940s to now, have all contributed to making her the leading cultural figure she is now globally. This is the first time in Greater China the full trajectory of Kusama’s art is presented in a comprehensive retrospective exhibition providing a holistic and unique perspective on the accomplishments of this visionary artist,” explains Doryun Chong, the Deputy Director and Curatorial and Chief Curator of M+ in a press release.
Together with the exhibition, a richly illustrated 400-page book titled ‘Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now’ will also be published by Thames & Hudson.
'Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now'' will run from November 12, 2022, to May 14, 2023, at M+ in Hong Kong. Find out more about the exhibition here.
