David Salle’s First South Korean Exhibition Opens in Seoul
“Fashion Ads in October Magazine” (2010) by David Salle is on display at Leeahn Gallery Seoul.
SEOUL — While renowned painter David Salle needs no introduction in most parts of the world, but South Korean audiences are just becoming acquainted with the artist’s specific brand of conceptualism. Salle opened his first exhibition here on March 15 at the new Seoul location of the influential, Daegu-based Leeahn Gallery.
Salle, who visited the gallery last week to adjust lighting and oversee his typically large-scale paintings’ final installation, created several new pieces that comprise the majority of the show’s 10 artworks. His signature use of disparate images of the female form — taken both from stock photos and his own shots — everyday items, and cultural references are still at work in his ever-effective pastiche.
The Seoul branch of Leeahn Gallery was opened earlier this month. The modern building was created by Suh Architects, a design company co-founded by Suh Do Ho’s brother, Eulho. Leeahn Gallery is known for greatly developing the arts scene in Daegu and introducing world-renowned, locally unfamiliar names such as Alex Katz and Mr. of the KaiKai KiKi artists group for the first time in Korea.
After the exhibition closes in Seoul, the displayed artworks and additional pieces will be taken to a larger showcase at the main Daegu gallery from April 25 to May 18.
“David Salle” will run through April 14 at Leeahn Gallery Seoul.
