Remember Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition that was meant to be showing at the Tate Modern in 2020, before it was postponed due to you-know-what?

Well, get your selfie sticks out: the gallery has announced that the highly Instagrammable exhibition is happening next year instead. Originally planned to mark the gallery’s 20th birthday in May 2020, Kusama’s exhibition will now run from March 29, 2021 until March 27, 2022. Tickets for non-members of the Tate Modern will cost just £5 – members can see it for free – and will be available to buy soon. Called Infinity Mirror Rooms, the exhibition will feature two of the mirror room installations created by the Japanese contemporary artist.

Visitors will also be able to see photographs and footage that look back over Kusama’s extensive body of work. One of the exhibits is the much-loved ‘Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of Life’, a clever immersive installation where the viewer can see themselves reflected in the mirrors, surrounded by what looks like thousands of twinkling lights.

The other installation, called ‘Chandelier of Grief’, gives the illusion of an endless display of crystal chandeliers in jet black mirrors. ‘We want to highlight some of the artists Tate Modern has championed over the past 20 years,’ said Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern. ‘Kusama and Bourgeois, for example, not only represent our commitment to great artists with truly international careers, but they also embody art’s journey from the avant-gardes of the early 20th century to the immersive installations being created today.’
