LEEAHN gallery will present the solo exhibition of Seung Joo Kim from April 7 to May 16 2015. Experiencing with various medias such as sculpture, film, and site-specific instllation, the artist has focused on the motif of a ruler. The artist subjectively distorts the meaning of the ruler whose function is to demostrate the absolute standard constructed by the society. Through the distortion of the ruler called the ‘odd ruler’, the aritist hopes to offer the opportunity to contemplate a human’s consciousness and to percieve the circumstances around the individuals.

The exhibition comprises Kim’s newly created works made out of steel and aluminium. The significant characteristic of her works is that each unit of a ruler from 0 to 9 are seperated out and then turn out to be an independent object. Thus, the generic role of a ruler, which is to ‘measure’, is destructed, and the numbers that are irregulary arranged also implies that the definition of numbers is faded. The extension of the gradations on the ruler and the seperation of number demonstrate the artist’s desire to escape from the strict limitation of socially constructed existence.

Kim’s new works are extended from the initial idea of the artistic practice by pursuing innovative changes in terms of form. She put a band around the exhibiting space and the works whose forms are linear with the vertical and horizontal lines are distorted and extended throughout the space. As a result, the object creates an organic relationship with the spatial void. Especially, the new materiasl such as aluminium and steel make this relationship possible unlike the wood, which was an initial material with which she experimented in the beginning stage of her artistic practice. Additionally, she uses primary colours, particularly pink for the first time, in this new art works. In fact, she believes that pink has sensitivity and complex psychological effect, thus, she wants to expose the sublety of colour that is similar to the temperament of an individual.

In the exhibiting space, Leeahn Red, the entire wall coloured with pink tones is a big canvas. The artist extemporally reconstructed the space and let the spectators invade the floor, wall and even the ceiling. The spectators are the main instigator who can meaure up the size of the ruler, comparing the size of their own bodies. In the space of Leeahn Grey, the distorted rulers with curves catch our gazes. These curved rulers represent the complete denial against the accurate and definite rule of cultural and social ideology and accentuate the characeristics of flexibility and the metaphysics. In other words, the ultimate goal of the artist is to induce various customs that have constructed underneath our social and cultural customs and visualize them by which people around the world can have a chance to contemplate on the self-identity as well as the surroundings around them. Through the interactions of the works in this visual space, the audience can have an illusive but fantastic experience while feeling as if his or her own body becomes smaller and bigger.

About the Artist
Born in Daegu, 1974, Seung Joo Kim studied in Youngnam university (BFA, MFA) and majored in digital art in Pratt Institute (MFA). Living and working in Daegu, Kim opend her first solo exhibition in Space 129 in 2001 and has participated in six exhibitions in total so far. In 2002 she received an artist award of Ha Jeong Woong and her works are collected in Gangnam Ipark, Seoul and Daegu stadium, Daegu. Recently, she had a significant opportunity to present the works in the the space of Insight of the internatinal art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong 2015.
 

리안갤러리는 2015년 4월 7일에서 5월 16일까지 대구출신의 젊은 작가 김승주의 개인전 〈Crossroad〉를 개최합니다. 작가는 자를 주 모티브로 조각, 영상, 장소 특정적 설치작업 site-specific installation 등의 다양한 매체로 작업을 꾸준히 이어오고 있습니다. 인간사회에 절대 기준을 제시하는 자의 본래 기능과 의미를 자의적으로 왜곡하는 작가는 ‘이상한 자 odd ruler’를 통해 관람자의 인식에 혼란을 주며, 이로 인해 주변환경을 어떻게 새롭게 인식할 것인가에 대한 질문을 공간적으로 구현해 선보입니다.

리안갤러리에서 처음으로 선보이는 이번 전시에서 작가는 스틸과 알루미늄을 이용한 신작을 선보입니다. 기존의 작품에서 일관성있게 보여지는 특징은 0에서 9까지 숫자단위별로 자의 눈금을 분리해 하나의 독립된 오브제로 표현한 점입니다. 상식을 벗어나 규격이 확대된 자는 ‘재다’ 라는 고유의 기능이 사라진 상태이며, 눈금 옆에 위치하는 0에서 9까지의 숫자들 역시 불규칙적으로 배치되어 있어 수치의 정의 역시 상실됩니다. 자의 눈금 크기를 비정상적으로 확대하고 눈금 단위 별로 숫자를 분리하는 행위를 통해 작가는 자를 엄격한 존재의 감옥에서 벗어나 독립된 존재로서 재탄생 시키고자 합니다.

이번에 선보이는 신작 역시 개념적으로 기존작업의 연장선에 있지만, 형식에 있어 변화를 시도합니다. 공간에 띠를 두르거나 직선위주의 작품은 교차하거나 곡선으로 변형 및 확장되어 공간과 유기적으로 관계를 맺습니다. 이는 나무를 주로 사용한 이전의 작업과는 달리 스틸과 알루미늄이 가진 변형가능한 재료의 물성을 이용한 공간 컴포지션을 특징으로 합니다. 또한 지난 십여년 간 원색을 주로 사용한 작가는 이번 신작에서 처음으로 핑크색을 사용한 작품을 선보입니다. 작가는 색에서 느끼는 심리적인 감정이 마치 사람에게서 풍기는 성향과 유사하다는 전제에서 핑크가 가지는 예민함과 복잡한 심리를 직선과 원색 사이에서 은유적으로 드러내고자 합니다.

2층 전시공간인 리안 레드 Leeahn Red 에는 핑크 계열의 모노톤으로 도색한 벽이 하나의 캔버스가 됩니다. 작가는 벽을 가로지르는 자의 눈금을 통해 사물과 공간을 ‘다른 방식으로 보기’를 유도합니다. 자의 본래기능이 ‘재다’ 로 부여된 것은 사회적 약속에 의한 것이나 이를 전혀다른 공간에서 마주한 순간 그것은 하나의 조형적 요소에 불과하며, 이를 통해 관람자는 자의성, 즉 사회적 약속에 의해 임의적으로 규정된 인식과 학습되어진 무의식 사이에서 오는 경험을 전혀 다른 차원에서 새로운 이미지로 환기시킬 수 있습니다. 지하 전시공간인 리안 그레이 Leeahn Grey 에서는 변형된 자를 곡선으로 연출한 작품을 선보입니다. 각자 다른 규격과 크기로 확대된 자의 크기를 정의내릴 수 있는 기준은 오로지 관람자의 몸과 비교해 가늠할 수 있는 상대적인 크기 뿐입니다. 작가는 정확성과 확고한 규범으로부터 자를 한층 적극적으로 일탈시켜 유동성과 추상성을 강조하고자 합니다.

결국 자의 시각적 변형을 통해 작가가 궁극적으로 유도하는 것은 현실을 속박하는 중요한 원리이면서도 일상 속에서 쉽게 인식되지 못하는 다양한 규범들의 존재를 가시화하고 그에 대해 사유해 보는 것입니다. 그는 자를 통해 절대적인 크기와 성격이 정해지고 고정된 인식을 토대로 우리 삶의 공간과 사물들이 ‘상식적’ 수준 안에서 결정되는 과정은 역으로 보면 누군가가 정해 놓은 규범들 속에서 재단되고 그에 대해 더 이상 질문하지 않는 우리가 가진 ‘사고’의 수동적인 모습과도 닮아 있다 말합니다. 이러한 관행에서 벗어나기 위해 작가는 크기를 재단하는 기준 자체를 새롭게 설정하거나 혹은 설정하는 행위 자체를 거부함으로써 근본적인 인식의 전환을 맞는 혁신적인 사건을 작품을 통해 도모합니다. 우리의 사고를 얽매고 있는 고정관념들을 불러내 이들과 자유롭게 유희하다 보면 쳇바퀴같이 굴러가는 고루한 일상으로부터의 일탈을 만끽할 수 있는 순간을 만나게 됩니다. 마치 ‘이상한 나라의 앨리스’ 주인공처럼 관람자는 자신의 몸이 커졌다거나 혹은 작아졌다고 느끼는 환상을 경험할 수 있을지도 모릅니다.

About the Artist
김승주 작가는 1974년 대구출생으로 영남대학교와 동 대학원을 졸업하고 뉴욕 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute, Brooklyn) 석사과정에서 디지털 아트를 수학하였습니다. 귀국 후 현재까지 대구에서 거주하며 작업활동을 하고 있습니다. 2001년 스페이스 129에서 첫 개인전을 가졌으며, 현재까지 총 6회 개인전과 국내외 그룹 전에 참여해오고 있습니다. 2002년 하정웅 청년작가상을 수상한 바 있으며, 작가의 작품은 서울 강남역 아이파크와 대구월드컵 스타디움에 소장되어 있습니다. 작가는 최근 리안갤러리 주체로, 홍콩 컨벤션전시센터에서 열린 2015 아트바젤 홍콩의 인사이트 부문 Art Basel Hong Kong l Insights 에 단독 부스로 소개되어 국제무대에 작품을 알렸습니다.
