LEEAHN gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of a Korean photographer, Woo Chong Il (b.1957) from October 8 to 29, 2014. The artist has contemplated beauty in earnest through the nudes of women over the three decades and has recently broadened the scope of works by adapting painting technique. The exhibition, < double portrait >, presents 30 pieces of works, including 25 pieces from the series of nudes in black and white created from the early 1990s to the present as well as 5 pieces from the ‘Women of Joseon Dynasty Series’ that he has continued since 2006.

< double portrait > composed of the two series demonstrates the different perspectives on the beauty of women. Having experienced both Korean and American cultures, the artist projected his perspective on beauty and the approaches to the ‘analogue and digital means’ onto the two distinct styles of portraits.

In the exhibition room, LEEAHN Grey, it presents the series of black and white nudes composed of analogue photographs portraying female nudes in their daily lives. Produced for a long period, the series shows his understanding of eroticism. The artist mentions that the beauty of a female body does not remain in one place like an object but has a power to induce communication. Notably, the series offers an opportunity to see the chronological process of how lines and motions of human bodies and the expression of sensibility are created and evolved from the early stage to the present.

The LEEAHN Red features the recently created works, ‘Women of Joseon Dynasty Series’. Since 2006, the artist changed his subject matter to more focused themes such as ‘Korea’ or ‘Joseon dynasty’ from just bodies of women. Being critical about the tendency that Korean young generation pursues westernized beauty and lacks in historical and cultural identities, the artist wanted to reclaim the originality and uniqueness of Korean beauty and present it in his own way. The ‘Women of Joseon Dynasty Series’ sensually expresses the beauty of women’s bodies and traditional clothing, representing their private scenes in daily life. Emphasizing the eyes in the portraits, the artist tried to show the beauty of slanted eyes of Asians. During the period of creating the series, he expanded his artistic style by adopting painting technique. Looking at the works closely, it is observed that the image is created out of shades of the hundreds of stones photographed by the artist like a mosaic. In fact, stone is a material that contains the temporality and the historicity as they are weathered and trimmed over time. At the same time, it is a part of the metaphors of Korea.

Born in Seoul in 1957, Woo, Chong Il works with photograph. He moved to the States in 1979 and studied painting and photography. With the work of ‘Women of the Joseon Dynasty’, he received the Public Vote prize winner conferred by 2011 Sovereign Asian Art Prize. 리안갤러리는 2014년 10월 8일부터 10월 29일까지 사진 작가 우종일 (b. 1957~)의 개인전을 개최합니다.작가는 지난 30여 년 간 인체 누드를 통해 미에 대한 진지한 고찰을 담아내고 최근 회화적인 연출방식을 이용해 작업의 범위를 넓혀가고 있습니다. 이번 전시 < double portrait > 에서 우종일은 1990년대 초반부터 최근까지 이어온 흑백 누드 시리즈 28점과 2006년부터 시작한 ‘조선시대 여인 시리즈’ 5점 등 총 30여 점의 사진을 선보입니다.

두 개의 시리즈로 구성된 전시 < double portrait >는 여성의 아름다움을 대하는 두 개의 시선과 방식을 각각의 공간에 보여줍니다. 미국과 한국이라는 다른 문화권에서 활동해온 작가의 ‘미에 대한 관점’과 ‘아날로그와 디지털을 대하는 방식’이 두 개의 서로 다른 초상화를 대변하고 있습니다.

지하 전시공간에 선보이는 흑백 누드 연작은 작가가 오랜 시간 아날로그 필름방식으로 찍어온 사진들로, 일상 속에 놓인 여인의 누드를 통해 신체의 아름다움에 대한 작가의 절제된 에로티시즘을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 작가는 여성의 인체란 사물처럼 아름다움 자체에 머무는 것이 아닌, 상대적인 커뮤니케이션을 이끌어내는 힘이 있다고 말합니다. 특히 이 시리즈는 인체의 선과 몸짓, 그리고 인체를 통한 감성의 표현이 공간과 어떻게 연출되는지 작업초반부터 현재까지 변천과정을 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다.

또 다른 전시공간에는 작가의 근작 시리즈로 최근 많은 관심을 받고 있는 ’조선 여인 시리즈’ 를 선보입니다. 2006년 이후 작가는 아름다움의 주체이자 소재를 여성의 인체에서 ‘한국’ 또는 ‘조선’ 이라는 좀 더 집중된 시점으로 접근합니다. 작가는 동시대를 살아가는 한국의 젊은 세대가 지나친 서구화를 지향하고 역사와 문화에 대한 정체성이 결여돼가고 있음을 보고, 한국 미의 독특함과 아름다움을 환기시키고 이를 현대적인 방식으로 제안하고자 합니다. ‘조선시대 여인 시리즈’ 는 당시 여인의 내밀한 일상을 재현하며 여성의 인체와 전통의상의 미를 관능적으로 표현합니다. 그가 초상화에서 강조하는 부분은 눈인데, 작가는 동양인만이 가진 가느다란 눈에서 자연스럽지만 독특한 미를 보여주고자 합니다. 이 시리즈를 전후로 작업방식은 사진에서 회화적인 기법으로 확장됩니다. 사진을 가까이 들여다보면 크고 작은 돌이 빼곡히 들어서 있음을 알 수 있는데, 작가가 촬영한 수만 개의 돌이 음영을 통해 마치 모자이크처럼 하나의 이미지를 완성하고 있습니다. 돌은 오랜 시간 다듬어져 시간성과 역사성을 고루 담은 소재이자 동시에 한국을 비유하는 메타포이기도 합니다.

우종일은 1957년 생으로 1979년 미국으로 이주했습니다. 대학시절 페인팅과 포토그래피를 전공하였고, 1988년 귀국 후 지금까지 한국에서 거주하고 있습니다. 2011년 홍콩 소버린 예술재단 2011 Sovereign Asian Art Prize 에서 ‘조선 여인들’ Women of the Joseon Dynasty 시리즈로 아시아 작가상 Asian Art public Vote prize winner을 수상한 바 있습니다. 미국, 홍콩, 일본을 중심으로 작품활동을 해왔으며, 최근 제너럴 일렉트릭 General Electric Corporation 에서 ‘조선 여인들’을 소장하였습니다.
