LEEAHN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present an exhibition of works by French artist Stéphane Bordarier (b.1953~ Lives and works in Paris) on view from August 6 to September 20, 2014. This solo exhibition comprises 13 recent works of various sizes in 6 years since his first solo exhibition at LEEAHN Gallery in Daegu, 2008.

Stéphane Bordarier pursues the exploration of painting, more specifically, of color. Since the early 1980s, having constantly studied on organic relations between colors and canvas surfaces, he has been on a long journey to the essence of paintings, especially to indulge in the attributes of colors. In contrast with the period 2004–2010, when Bordarier was exploring different modes of association between canvases, this exhibition comprises individual, autonomous works.

Stéphane Bordarier was influenced by avant-garde and Italian paintings in the 1960s to 1970s. Above all, the Italian fresco paintings of Trecento and Quattrocento era inspired him with the purity of paintings beyond religious anecdotes, and subsequently led him to become immersed in the ‘simplicity’ of paintings. The completed solid-color masses on his unprocessed canvas demonstrate a sense of unity between colors and forms. The artist excludes forms or themes and pursues materiality of paintings to create quality colors on canvas.

The work process of Stéphane Bordarier is important to understand his sincere attitude towards paintings and distinctive painting world. The artist mixes pigments with glues as in Italian fresco paintings, naturally limiting the time and speed of his involvement in paintings. On a flat canvas, he applies rabbit-skin glues and then spreads out paints on the wet glues using a spatula or scraper. Colors permeate the canvas and at the same time blend with pigments. Here, the time spent on drying is a critical element in creating each final work of art. Simultaneously, the time allows the artist to take a step back from the canvas. With the concentration and evaporation of colors plus acts of immersion and retreat manifested on canvas, his works generate infinite expandability of opaque but transparent color sensitiveness and of light-absorbing smooth surfaces. The sparse voids on canvas are not blank spaces but another forms of colors. The artist emphasizes the blank edges should be perceived together with the colors left on canvas. The visual effects of color planes merging with edges constitute a significant element determining the overall atmosphere and shape, giving off an aura of the work in its entirety.

Paris-based artist Stéphane Bordarier has been with Jean Fournier Gallery, Paris since 1989. In 2008, he drew attention at the Arco Art Fair, and had the first solo exhibition in Korea at LEEAHN Gallery. In February 2014, the Jean Fournier Gallery presented a solo exhibition of his new works, where the artist focuses on of two colors of his own making: ‘mars violet’ which he has been using since 1996 and knows ‘by heart’ and ‘copper sulpate’ a source of numerous transparency effects.

리안갤러리 서울은 2014년 8월 6일에서 9월 20일까지 프랑스 파리를 중심으로 활동하는 스테판 보르다리에 (Stéphane Bordarier, 1953~ )의 개인전을 마련합니다. 2008년 리안갤러리 대구에서 국내 첫 개인전을 가진 이래 6년 만에 선보이는 이번 전시에서 작가는 다양한 사이즈로 제작된 최근작 13점을 선보입니다.

스테판 보르다리에의 작품은 ‘회화 특유의 색과 화면의 질’ 에 집중합니다. 1980년대 초반이래 색상과 캔버스 표면의 유기적 관계에 대해 지속적으로 연구해온 그는 페인팅의 본질, 특히 색이 가진 특성을 탐닉하는 오랜 여정 중에 있습니다. 지난 2008년에 선보인 전시가 색상과 캔버스 표면의 유기적 관계에 대해 연구한 작품들로 주를 이루었다면, 이번 전시는 좀 더 개별적이고 자율적으로 제작된 작품으로 구성됩니다.

스테판 보르다리에는 1960년-70년 아방가르드와 이탈리아 회화에서 영향을 받았습니다. 특히 14-15세기 이탈리아 프레스코 그림들에서 종교적 일화를 넘어선 회화 자체의 순수성을 보게 되는데 이는 이후 작품에서 ‘회화의 단순성’에 몰두하는 과정으로 맥락을 이어갑니다.

가공되지 않은 캔버스 위에 단색의 덩어리로 완성된 그의 작품은 색채와 형태가 화면 속에서 완전한 일체임을 보여주고 있습니다. 작가는 형태나 주제를 배제하고 오직 2차원 페인팅의 물질성만을 추구하되, 화면 위 양질의 색을 만들어내고자 합니다.

보르다리에의 작업과정은 페인팅에 대한 작가의 진지한 태도와 독특한 2차원의 세계를 이해하는데 중요합니다. 작가는 이탈리아 프레스코처럼 안료에 접착제를 섞어 사용함으로 자연스럽게 스스로가 회화에 개입하는 시간과 속도를 제한합니다. 그는 평평한 캔버스 위에 아교를 바르고, 젖은 안료위에 주걱이나 스크래퍼scraper로 페인트를 넓게 바릅니다. 컬러는 그 자체로 온전히 캔버스에 스며들 뿐만 아니라, 안료와 함께 섞이게 되는데, 이때 건조되는 시간은 각각의 작품을 결정하는 중요한 요소이며, 동시에 작가를 화폭에서 잠시 물러나게 합니다. 화폭 위에서 일어나는 색채의 집중과 증발, 행위의 몰입과 퇴각의 움직임을 드러낸 후 그의 작품은 불투명하면서도 투명한 색감과 빛을 흡수하듯 매끈한 표면으로서 무한한 확장을 그려내고 있습니다. 이 때 화면위로 드문드문 비워지는 공간은 여백이 아니라 또 다른 색의 형상입니다. 작가는 화면에 남은 색상만을 유일한 형상으로 바라보는 것이 아닌, 빈 공간으로 남아 있는 가장자리들과 함께 인지되길 강조합니다. 색면이 가장자리(edges)와 어우러지면서 나타나는 시각적 효과는 색면의 전체적 분위기와 형상을 결정 짓고 작품 전체의 아우라를 만들어내는 중요한 요소입니다.

리안갤러리 서울은 울림과 긴장감, 고요한 응시가 동시에 일어나는 스테판 보르다리에의 작품세계를 선보이는 이번 전시에 관람객들의 많은 관심과 방문 바랍니다.

스테판 보르다리에는 프랑스 파리를 중심으로 활발한 활동을 하고 있으며, 파리의 대표적인 갤러리인 장 푸르니에 Jean Fournier 갤러리의 오랜 전속작가입니다. 지난 2008년 아르코 아트페어 Arco Art Fair에 소개되어 주목을 받았으며, 같은 해 국내에서는 처음으로 리안갤러리에서 개인전을 선보였습니다. 최근 2014년 2월 장푸르니에 갤러리에서 개인전으로 통해 신작을 선보였습니다. 이 전시에서 작가는 직접 만든 2가지 색상에 집중했는데, 이는 각각 1996년부터 사용해온 ‘Mars violet’과 다양한 투명성(transparency)의 효과를 불러일으키는 색상 ‘Copper sulpate’ 입니다.
