LEEAHN Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Lee Dongi (b. 1967~) and Kim Hyunsoo (b.1976~ ) on view from May 22 to July 5, 2014.

Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse is combined with Japanese Atom into Ato Mouse by Lee Dongi. Myths, dreams and realities are portrayed in hyper-realistic human-figure sculptures by Kim Hyunsoo. These two artists get together to exhibit more than 20 pieces of artwork in this show.

Dongi Lee is renowned as a representative pop artist in Korea for his Ato Mouse familiar to the public. He borrowed Mickey Mouse and Atom characters to give birth to Ato Mouse, an outcome of his long-standing interest in cartoon images and popular culture, whose image was initiated in 1993 with an impromptu simple drawing. Later on, he has focused on images of cartoon characters in tandem with daily life and contemporary events, and further on combination of abstract images with cartoon counterparts as well as drama series depicting dramatic characters or captured scenes. Since 2012, he has presented pure abstract paintings using spray paint, which is used for graffiti easily seen on streets and symbolizing a subcultural aspect. Lee Dongi adopts the very spray paint across his abstract and pure paintings. The gallery exhibits an array of his works ranging from Ato Mouse to abstract paintings.

Creating narratives on shuttling between reality and imagination with the images of humans interbred with animals, Kim Hyunsoo puts his Breik and Innocent Series on display. As a hyperrealist sculptor expressing even a strand of hair, eyes and skins with obtrusive veins of unreal objects, Kim Hyunsoo relies on realistic representation of obviously non-representational figures, rendering surrealist images of conflicts and clashes between two antithetical worlds, for example; autobiographical memories of past nostalgia, dreams and realities versus mythical narratives, bespeaking reality, fiction, representation and reconstruction. The gallery introduces idiosyncratic worlds of imagination stepping away from but facing the reality via a rendezvous of Lee Dongi and Kim Hyunsoo, borrowing cartoon characters representing pop culture and mixing past images with reality to create objects and narratives coated with realistic colors.

Lee Dongi was born in Seoul in 1967 and graduated from Hong-ik University with bachelor and master’s degrees in painting. He has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands as well as in Korea, with his artworks being housed by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Leeum Museum, the Kumho Museum, the Gana Art Center and the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taiwan. Kim Hyunsoo was born in Gyeonggi-do in 1976 and graduated from Hong-ik University with bachelor and master’s degrees in sculpture. Based in Seoul, he has come to prominence at home and abroad over the past years, holding solo exhibitions at the Doosan gallery (2011) and the Gallery Hyundai (2009).
 

리안갤러리에서는 5월22일부터 7월 5일까지 이동기 + 김현수 전시를 엽니다.

월트 디즈니의 미키 마우스와 일본의 아톰을 합성시킨 아토마우스로 대표되는 이동기와 극사실 인체조각으로 신화와 꿈 그리고 현실을 그리는 김현수는 이번 전시에서 대표작품 20여 점을 선보입니다.

아토마우스로 대중에게 친숙한 이동기는 한국의 대표적인 팝아트 작가로 널리 알려져 왔습니다. 미키마우스와 아톰 캐릭터를 차용하여 탄생한 아토마우스는 만화적 이미지와 대중문화에 대한 작가의 오랜 관심의 결과로 1993년 즉흥적이고도 간단한 드로잉으로부터 시작된 이미지입니다. 이후 만화적 캐릭터에 일상과 시대를 관통하는 사건과 이미지를 작업으로 이어왔으며 이후 추상이미지와 만화적 이미지를 결합하거나 드라마 캐릭터 혹은 포착된 장면을 그린 드라마 시리즈를 발표해 왔습니다. 2012년부터 스프레이 페인트를 재료로 사용한 순수 추상회화를 발표하고 있는데, 거리에서 흔하게 볼 수 있는 그래피티에 사용되는 스프레이 페인트는 하위문화를 상징하는 대표적 재료로 이동기의 추상회화에서 순수회화의 영역으로 차용되고 있습니다. 리안갤러리 전시에서는 아토마우스에서 추상회화에 이르는 다양한 작품이 전시 됩니다.

인간과 짐승의 이종교합 이미지로 실재와 상상을 오가는 이야기를 만들고 있는 김현수는 자신의 대표작인 Breik과 이노센트 시리즈를 전시합니다. 현실에 존재하지 않는 대상을 머리카락, 눈 그리고 핏줄이 드러나는 피부까지 극사실 기법으로 조각하는 김현수 작가는 사실적 기법을 사용하되 그 속에 확연히 드러나는 비재현적 모습으로 과거에의 향수, 꿈과 현실 등 자전적 기억과 신화이야기 등 상반되는 두 세계의 충돌과 갈등으로 초현실적 이미지를 그리며 실재와 허구, 재현과 재구성을 보여주고 있습니다. 리안갤러리는 대중문화를 대표하는 만화캐릭터를 차용하고 과거의 이미지와 현실을 섞어 혼성의 대상과 이야기를 만들어내어 그 위로 사실의 색을 입히는 이동기 + 김현수, 두 작가의 만남을 통해 현실을 비켜선 듯 마주하고 있는 독특한 상상의 세계를 소개합니다.

이동기 작가는 1967년 서울 출생이며, 홍익대학교 회화과와 동 대학원 회화과를 졸업했습니다. 한국을 포함한 홍콩, 일본, 독일 네덜란드 등에서 개인전을 가진바 있으며, 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관을 비롯해 리움 미술관, 금호미술관, 가나 아트센터 그리고 대만 국립국부기념관에 소장되어 있습니다. 김현수 작가는 1976년 경기 출생이며, 홍익대학교와 조소과와 동 대학원 조각과를 졸업했습니다. 서울에서 거주하며 활동중인 그는 지난 십 여 년 간 국내외를 무대로 두각을 보이며, 두산갤러리(2011)와 갤러리 현대(2009)에서 개인전을 가진바 있습니다.
