LEEAHN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of David Salle in Korea as its grand opening exhibition. Salle and other artists, such as Eric Fischl and Julian Schnabel, represent American art in 1980s. The artist has been creating his unique painting style that stands out with images combined from incongruity and accidental way. 

David Salle was born in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1952 and grew up in Wichita, Kansas, but earning his BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. There, he had a chance to meet and study with John Baldessari, a Conceptual painter who, as a teacher and fellow artist, influenced many artists of Salle's generation, including Barbara Bloom, Goldstein, Matt Mullican and James Welling. His passion and effort toward painting led him to continuously study on painting, and he became one of artists, who represent contemporary art of the end of 20th century.

The artist has often used so called 'appropriated images from the mass media in late 1970s and early 1980s, and this became central to his practice. Salle's generation was greatly influenced by pop art, rock music, and anti-politics, raised with TV and fast food, where everything can be replaced by disposable materials. It was the period when conceptual work replaces the works of image and representation. Salle has been challenging this time period with questions on art, such as whom it is for and what it is, maintaining his passion on painting unlike most artists at the time. Salle has been continuously researching for large scale paintings to invoke the viewer's reaction not only from a mere surface of canvas, but even deeper from unconsciousness. His work not only closely linked to conceptual frameworks in particular in his citation of disparate cultural elements from the post-war period, but he is equally involved in the tradition of oil painting, whose revival marks another signal tendency in late 70s and early 80s. In addition to painting, Salle has worked extensively in stage design, principally with choreographer Karole Armitage. In 1994, he directed a critically acclaimed film, Search And Destroy(1994), produced by Martin Scorcese and starring Griffin Dunne, Ethan Hawke, Dennis Hopper, John Turturro, and christopher Walken. 

One of the signal elements of Salle's paintings has been to present melding itself. It is possible to identify diverse cultural signs, drawn from an array of eras and locales, in Salle's work. More interesting from the pointof view of pure painting may be to observe how succinctly and precisely salle has been able to combine distinct subject techniques and styles in the same canvas. On a Theoretical Level, the combination of photographic with painterly imagery - often the same image is both photographic and painterly- is one of Salle's primary achievements.

The exhibition at LEEAHN consists of ten new works. The exhibiting works show about three types of the characteristics. First one is of mid-sized diptychs, featuring reclining women on the bottom panels with complex abstraction on top. Another highlights what could be called simplified "camp imagery" with disparate floating images. And the third comprises small paintings with images of reclining women blended into images of lakes and boats. 

David Salle earned a MFA and BFA from California Institute of Arts, where he studied with John Baldessari. When he moved to New York, he worked with Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Thomas Lawson. Major exhibitions of his work have taken place at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. In 2009, Salle's work was also featured in an exhibition atthe Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His work was once introduced before at the Ho-Am Art Museum, but it will be the first time in Korea to have solo exhibition at LEEAHN.

리안갤러리서울은 개관 첫 전시로 데이비드 살리(1952 ~ )의 국내 첫 개인전을 준비하였습니다. 줄리앙 슈나벨, 에릭 피슬과 함께 1980년대 미국미술을 대표하는 데이비드 살리는 우연과 부조화성이 돋보이는 화면으로 자신의 독특한 회화세계를 창조해 온 작가입니다. 

오클라호마주 노르마에서 1952년 태어났고 캔자스 주 위치타에서 성장한 데이비드 살리는 California Institute of the Arts에서 미술 학사와 미술학 석사를 마쳤습니다. 칼아츠에서 바바라 블룸, 잭 골드스타인, 매트 멀리컨, 제임스 웰링 같은 살리 세대의 작가들에게 영향을 준 개념 미술가, 존 발데사리를 스승이자 동료 작가로 만나게 된 데이비드 살리는 회화를 향한 열정과 헌신으로 끈기 있게 회화를 연구해 오며 20세기말 현대미술을 대변하는 작가로 주목받아 왔습니다. 

1970년대 후반부터 1980년대 초까지 대중매체에서 자주 등장하는 이미지를 차용했던 데이비드 살리의 회화에서 차용 이미지(appropriated image)는 작품을 구성하는 논리의 중심을 이룹니다. TV와 패스트푸드에 길들여지고 모든 것이 일회용품으로 대체될 수 있는 첫 세대에 속한 그는 팝 아트와 록 뮤직, 저항 정치학의 영향을 받았고 개념이 이미지와 대상화 된 작품을 대신하는 시대에 무엇을, 그리고 누구를 위한 예술인가, 도대체 예술이란 무엇인가? 라는 질문을 다시 던지며 동시대 다른 작가들과 달리 회화_페인팅에 끈기 있는 자세로 열정과 헌신을 쏟아왔습니다. 데이비드 살리는 사람들이 지각할 수 있는 회화의 표면뿐만 아니라 의식하지 못하는 곳에서 조차 감상자의 반응을 불러일으키는 대형 회화의 창작을 위해 끊임없이 연구해 왔으며, 그의 회화는 이차대전 이후에 양산된 이질적 문화적 요소들을 페인팅에 인용한다는 점에서는 개념미술의 형식과 강하게 밀착되는 모습을 보여 주는 동시에 유화의 전통을 여전히 고수하며 70년대 후반과 80년대 초의 또 다른 시대적 징후로 볼 수 있는 구상회화의 부활을 이끌었습니다. 살리는 페인팅에 전념하는 한편, 무대디자인에도 관심을 보여 안무가 캐롤 아르미타쥐와 협업을 하는 등 폭넓은 활동을 해왔습니다. 1994년에는 탐구와 파괴(Search and Destroy)라는 영화를 만들었고 비평가들에게 좋은 평가를 받은 바 있습니다. 마틴 스코세이지가 이 영화의 제작을 맡았고 그리핀 던, 이단 호크, 데니스 호퍼, 존 터투로, 크리스토퍼 월킨이 출연하였습니다.

'뒤섞임과 혼합'은 살리의 작품임을 알리는 대표적인 특징이라고 할 수 있습니다. 특정 시대와 지역적 색깔들이 드러난 살리의 회화에서 다양한 문화적 기호들을 식별해내는 일, 하나의 화면에 주제, 기법, 스타일을 얼마나 간결하고 정확하게 결합시켜왔는가를 순수 회화의 관점에서 살펴본다면 훨씬 더 흥미로운 일이 될 것입니다. 같은 이미지를 가지고 사진과 회화 양쪽에서 접근하여 회화적 이미지와 사진 이미지의 조합을 이루어 내는 것은 회화의 세계에서 살리가 이룬 주된 성과입니다. 

리안갤러리 전시에서는 최근작 10여점이 전시됩니다. 전시되는 작품은 세 가지로 구분되는 특징을 보여주는데, 먼저 두 개로 분할된 중간 크기의 캔버스를 사용해 화면 하단에는 누워있는 여인상을, 화면 상단에는 알아보기 힘든 추상 형태들을 담고 있는 작품으로 회색조 단색화법으로 표현된 인물 이미지들은 작가가 직접 촬영한 것들입니다. 두 번째로 전체적인 화면 구성과 아무런 연결고리를 찾을 수 없이 화면 위를 떠다니면서 이질적인 느낌을 주는 단순하게 표현된 '캠프 이미지.' 세 번째로 누워있는 여인의 모습이 호수와 보트 같은 풍경과 뒤섞여 있는 소품들로 즉흥적이면서 수채화와 같은 느낌을 주는데, 작가의 1980년대 초반 수채화 연작을 닮아 있습니다. 

데이비드 살리(David Salle, Oklahoma, 1952 ~ )는 캘리포니아 미술대학에서 대학과 대학원을 다녔으며 그 곳에서 존 발데사리(John Baldessari)를 만나 미술공부를 하게 되었습니다. 1980년대에 뉴욕으로 이주하여 리차드 프린스, 신디 셔먼, 로버트 롱고, 토마스 로슨 등과 작업하였으며 휘트니 미술관, 구겐하임 빌바오, LA MOCA 등에서 전시를 가졌으며 2009년 메트로폴리탄 미술관에 초대되어 전시를 가졌습니다. 우리나라에서는 호암미술관에서 작품이 소개된 바 있으나 작가의 국내 개인전은 리안갤러리 전시가 첫 전시입니다.
