Katinka Lampe: FREEZE POSE 

The tradition of Netherlands painting, which continued from Frans Hals, Rembrandt, and Johannes Vermeer, have shown its unique style and sense of color through Portrait, still-life, and landscape paintings. Its bold and rapid brushstrokes, emotional use of light and color, and the use of metaphor in painting subject for hidden representation, have all became important aspects to understand Dutch art, furthermore, the Northern European art. Netherlands continues its tradition of Northern European art by creating images that are dreamlike, touching deep sensibility even within an era of contemporary that covers various genres of art, such as photography and video. The delicate figures from these paintings, often look pale in a moody background, holds our attention by giving transcendental presence, which travels across time and places that are different from ours. 

Katinka Lampe is from Netherland and actively working across Europe. The figures of her painting confront the viewers without giving any information, leaving us some questions. The artist achieves this unique style by contrasting blank face against soft expression, which made from the use of emotional sense on touches, colors, and light. She finds models of her works either from mass media images, such as internet and newspaper, or her acquaintances. The faces of models fill most space of canvas, usually lowering their heads or gaze into far away space outside a canvas. The painting captures the moment just like the time when camera lens shakes right before the capturing of an image, resembling scenes from those of still-life. And as it contrasts against cold monotone background, the figures of her work are elevated with its symbolic representation.

In this exhibition, the models in paintings name Jonas, Fenna, Zenna, and Gisele, are either Katinka Lampe's daughter or her close acquaintances. The artist successfully captures the frozen image and moment beyond the time and space. In her painting, there is a girl with red wig reminds of King Louis XIV of France, woman and child with Dutch traditional costume, and a girl with her back turned toward us, showing the both sides of contrasting idea; tradition and fashion, past and present, and illusion and real. The gazes of figures are thrown upon an anonymous someone, evokes the viewer's curiosity. The artist also brings traditional elements to the present by overlapping some images of old master's to her works, giving an overlapping narratives and images over the figures of the contemporary. 

The exhibition title "FREEZE POSE" comes from Hip-Hop Break dance, indicating a still moment or the final action of break dance. The artist records the moment that exists between one action and the other, converting short time of paused moment of moving scenes to an eternal one. Her figures exist between the moments that are not visible, but only exist within the space that shares both past and present. Through a single figure, the artist is able to make the relationship between past and present, tradition and contemporary, and time and space.

프란츠 할스, 렘브란트, 베르메어 등으로 이어지는 네덜란드 회화 전통은 인물과 정물 그리고 풍경화에서 독특한 회화양식과 색채에 대한 감성을 보여주었습니다. 과감한 붓 터치, 감성적인 빛과 색채의 사용 그리고 그림 속 대상에 숨겨놓은 상징적 은유는 네덜란드 회화와 더불어 북유럽 미술을 이해하는 중요한 요소가 되었습니다. 현대미술에서 네덜란드는 사진과 영상 등 다양화 된 현대미술의 영역에서 특유의 감성을 자극하는 다소 몽환적이기까지 한 이미지를 창조해 내며 북유럽 미술 전통을 이어오고 있습니다. 음울한 배경 속 여리고 때로 창백해 보이는 인물은 시간과 공간을 초월한 대상인 듯 그렇게 우리의 시선을 붙잡습니다. 

네덜란드 출신으로 유럽을 무대로 활발하게 활동하고 있는 카틴카 램프(Katinka Lampe )의 회화 속 등장하는 인물은 아무런 정보도 주지 않은 채 궁금증을 자아내는 대상으로 우리 앞에 마주합니다. 특유의 감각적 터치와 감성적 색채와 빛의 사용으로 부드러운 표현과 그 속에 비치는 무표정한 인물을 대조시키며 독특한 인물화를 완성하고 있는 작가는 인터넷이나 신문 등에서 찾을 수 있는 모델이나 지인의 얼굴을 대상으로 합니다. 화면의 대부분을 채우고 있는 인물의 얼굴은 고개를 숙이거나 화면 밖을 응시하고 있으며, 흔들리는 듯 포착된 순간은 마치 상징이 숨어있는 정물화를 보는 듯 모노톤의 차가운 배경 위로 대조를 이룹니다. 

이번 전시에 소개되는 작품에 등장하는 각각의 인물은 Jonas, Fenna, Zenna 그리고 Gisele 등 작가의 딸 혹은 주변 가까운 지인의 얼굴로 회화 속에서 작가는 시공을 초월한 시간 속에 정지된 모습, 포착된 순간을 그리고 있습니다. 프랑스 루이14세 시대를 연상케 하는 붉은색 가발을 쓴 인물, 네덜란드 전통복식을 한 여인과 아이 그리고 등을 보이고 돌아서있는 인물은 전통과 패션, 과거와 현재, 허상과 실재의 양면을 담고 있습니다. 화면 속 인물의 시선이 향하는 익명의 대상은 보는 이의 궁금증을 불러일으키고, 과거 옛 거장의 작품 속 대상, 혹은 전통적 요소들을 현재로 불러내어 다른 시간, 다른 공간 그리고 이중적 실재와 관계 맺기를 시도하는 작가의 회화는 오늘의 인물위로 시간과 공간의 중첩된 내러티브, 중첩된 이미지를 찾게 합니다. 

전시 타이틀 FREEZE POSE는 힙합 브레이크 댄스(Hip-Hop Break Dance)에서 사용되는 용어로 연속적 움직임의 멈춤의 순간, 브레이크 댄스의 마지막 동작을 이르는 용어입니다. 미동도 않는 인물의 순간을 포착하는 작가의 화면은 동작과 동작의 사이 잠시 멈춤의 순간을 영원히 정지된 시간으로 기록하고 있으며 보이지 않는 찰나가 머무는 과거와 현재가 공존하는 인물을 통해 작가는 과거와 현재, 전통과 현대 그리고 시간과 공간의 관계 맺기를 하나의 인물로 그려내고 있습니다.
