LEEAHN Galley is pleased to announce the exhibition of photograph, Boo Moon, In the Woods, from June 5 to July 7, 2012. 

Born in Daegu, 1955, Boomoon held the first solo show at Seoul Press Center in 1975. Since then, he continued to photograph relentlessly up to date. While in his early times, he had captured cityscape of Seoul, Busan, Daegu,and rural landscape of Andong, and portraits of people, which present the lives of ordinary people and their remains, from the 1980s he started to work on scenes of horizons, seas, sky, confronting more "nature itself". In 2000 relocated to Sokcho, he has produced the series of Stargazing, Naksan, Sansu, Odaesan, that is portraying mountains and seas nearby Sokcho, and moreover, traveling to extreme regions such as Greenland, Iceland and Sahara deserts, where no sign of inhabitation, he has depicted the nature taking a calm attitude with stern look.
Turning away from the view of delivering the scenes of ready-made signification and creating specific technology involved images that are quite familiar with us, Boo Moon is trying to present the open landscape in which viewers can experience a landscape as a mean of self-reflection. As in the artist statement, "In my work, the place for people is not expected to be in the image, but lies in front of the camera where I was standing, and which is open to anyone.", he suggests the idea that the artist and the viewer is not suppose to gaze at each other, but to face the same direction, share the perspectives and enhanced perceptions. Even the audience is overwhelmed with the grand scale of the landscape image, which is over 3 meters, as if one is standing before the scene, all the detailed information about time and place is enough to read the sentiments of the artist, whichis covered up within the strict silence.

For his exhibition at LEEAHN Gallery, the series of Odaesan, Stargazing at Sokcho are presented. It has been for 10 years since the first showing of the series of 'Stargazing, at Sokcho' in Boomoon's solo show at Gallery Ci-Gong, the former one of Leeahn, in 2002, which reminds us the meaning of how people, place and the pieces of work would get engaged with each other.
Boo Moon held solo exhibitions in Seoul, Busan, and Dague, as well as invited to overseas institutions including Yokohama, Bologna and Paris. Above all, the solo show at Arco Art Center of Arts Council Korea in 2007, which brought together the work had done in Sokcho between 2000 and 2007. His work is in the collections of public institutions, including JGS Foundation, New York, Yokohama Museum of Art, Yokohama, Hana Bank Collection, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, and National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Seoul. Boo Moon's work has been introduced in the book of Charlotte Cotton, Photograph as Contemporary art, Thames & Hudson, London, 2004, in the edited book by Antonia Carver, BRINK: 100 Photographers, 10 Curators, 10 Writers, Phaidon Press, London, 2002, and as well as American photography art book publisher, Nazraeli Press released four of his books, Boo Moon (1999), On the Clouds (2004), Stargazing at Sokcho (2006), Naksan (2010).

리안갤러리는 6월5일부터 7월7일까지 권부문 사진전 '숲에서_In the Woods'를 개최합니다.

1955년 대구에서 태어난 권부문은 1975년 서울 프레스센터에서 열었던 첫 개인전을 시작으로 현재까지 40년에 가까운 시간동안 쉼 없이 사진작업을 펼쳐왔습니다. 초기 서울, 부산, 대구의 도시 풍경 및 안동 등 시골의 풍경과 사람을 찍은 사진으로 우리네 사는 모습과 삶의 자취를 가감없는 담백한 시선으로 기록했던 작가는 1980년대부터는 지평선, 바다, 하늘 등 자연을 대상으로 삼기하기 시작하였습니다. 2000년 속초로 삶과 작업의 터전을 옮긴 후 '별보기' '북풍경' '낙산' '산수' '오대산' 등 속초를 둘러싼 산과 바다를 작업하고, 사하라, 그린랜드, 아이슬랜드를 여행하며 인간의 흔적이 없는 대자연의 풍경을 엄중하고 냉정한 태도로 사각 프레임에 담았습니다. 

권부문의 사진은 그동안 우리에게 익숙한 의미부여가 두드러진 풍경, 특별한 기술이 개입된 이미지로서의 풍경에서 발을 돌려 보는이에게 열린풍경, 체험의 풍경, 고독과 자유정신의 풍경을 담고 있습니다. "내 작품에서 인간의 자리는 이미지 속이 아니라 이미지 앞, 내가 카메라와 함께 섰던 그 자리이며, 누구에게나 열려있는 자리다." 라는 작가의 말은 자신의 풍경을 대하는 우리와 작가가 대상을 두고 서로 마주보며 조응하는 것이 아니라 작가와 같은 곳을 바라보고 같은 시선과 풍경에 대한 인식을 새롭게 할 것을 제안하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 3미터가 넘는 거대한 스케일의 풍경 이미지는 보는 이를 대상과 마주 서 있는 듯 압도해 오지만 그 속에 세밀하게 살아있는 장소와 시간의 정보들은 엄격한 침묵 속에 은밀히 숨어있는 작가의 정서를 보여줍니다. 

이번 리안갤러리 전시에서는 '오대산' 시리즈와 '속초에서 별보기' 시리즈를 소개합니다. 2002년 리안갤러리의 전신인 시공갤러리에서 처음 발표 한 이후 꼭 10년 만에 새로운 제작과정을 거쳐 다시 소개하는 '속초에서 별보기' 시리즈는 이번 전시를 장소와 사람, 작품의 인연으로 더욱 의미 있게 합니다. 

권부문은 서울과 부산, 대구에서의 개인전은 물론 요코하마와 파리 등 해외 미술관 전시에 초대되어 작업을 발표해 왔으며, 특히 2007년 서울 아르코 미술관은 2000년부터 2007년까지의 속초시절 작업을 정리한 초대 개인전을 열었습니다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕의 JGS Foundation, 일본 요코하마 미술관, 하나은행콜렉션, 리움삼성미술관, 국립현대미술관 등에 소장되어 있습니다. 또한 현대예술사진을 총 정리한 Thames & Hudson 출판사의 『현대예술로서의 사진 Photograph As Contemporary Art』(샬럿 코튼, 런던, 2004)과 Phaidon 출판사의『블링크 : 100 사진작가, 10 큐레이터, 10 평론가 BLINK. 100 PHOTOGRAPHERS 010 CURATORS 010 WRITERS』(런던, 2002)에 실렸으며, 미국의 사진 전문 출판사 Nazraeli Press가 그의 사진집 4권 ― Boo Moon(1999), On the Clouds(2004), Stargazing at Sokcho(2006), Naksan(2010)을 펴냈습니다.
