LEEAHN Gallery opens private exhibition of Mister (Mr., 1969 ~) who attractions attention as the next generation leader of Japanese contemporary art from 19th November to 25th December.

Mister (Mr.) who connects the pedigree of Japan pop represented by Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara is an author who deals with culture code which represents contemporary Japanese society such as Otaku culture and Lolita complex of contemporary Japanese who adhere to animation or manga in his work.

Author belonging to KaiKai KiKi Ltd. which is a studio established by Murakami Mr. (1969 ~) started as an assistant of Murakami studio and receives attention as representing authors of Neo Japanism who will succeed Murakami together with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima and is lively active mainly in Paris and New York.

Mister who began to let the contemporary art community know his existence by drawing a little girl in a form of animation on the back side of ordinary receipts you receive after purchasing goods everyday and by gathering andexhibiting them has been creating art world of his own only with peculiar character and color of pop-art. Drawings of Mr. where boys and girls with big eyes and dark hair and innocent faces appear reflect influences of Japanese pop and animation with flat surface look color and character of peculiar style. And the peculiar form which grafts drawing of animation style onto pop art and which represents Japanese pop including Murakami now becomes one style which cannot be left out by not to mention Murakami, young authors who succeed him and Japanese contemporary art.

The works of Mr. which reflect various culture symbols and codes in multi-layers is paying attention to subculture which is inherent in the inside of Japanese contemporary society and is dealing with it as a portrait of contemporary time. I can see that the world of the work of Mr. which is my appearance today and portrait of contemporary Japanese society deals with Lolita complex and Otaku culture profoundly. The character which appears in the work of the author Mr. who explores persistently our portraits today with popular and typical visual language and at the same time draws genuine ideal world is Lolita-esque (arose from a novel of the novelist from Russia Vladimir Nabokov 'Lolita' and tells about sexual curiosity or attraction which an adult man has on immature girl). It is implying Otaku culture which began to be generated in Japan in 1970's by the men who are addicted to emotion and animation, science fiction and video game.

Mister who was discovered by the world-class contemporary artist Takashi Murakami majored in art in Tokyo Sokei University in 1996 and since the year 1995 he has been active as a major author belonging to art organization of Takashi Murakami, KaiKai KiKi. His works are possessed by art museums of the US and Europe and private collectors, and in 2006 were invited to Lyon modern art museum together with Aiah Takano and Chiho Aoshima and opened exhibitions and continues to be lively active. Mr. exhibition in Leeahn Gallery this time which is the first private exhibition in Korea and is prepared in the largest scale exhibition as a gallery exhibition except for art museums will be a precious opportunity for you to see the world of works of the artist on the whole, drawing, engraving, photograph including the painting work whose length amounts to 6 meters, in addition to a large sculpture work 'Strawberry Voice' and video work 'Nobody Dies'. The work of the shape of the head with twin braid hair 'Strawberry Voice' is the work produced in 2007 and it is the work which shows the world of various works of the artist drawing, painting, sculpture and video condensing them into one. And it is the masterpiece of the artist in which the world reflected on the pupils of the eyes of genuine character and objet which fill up the inside of the sculpture show the world which is the origin of the memory and imagination of the artist.

리안갤러리에서는 11월 19일부터 12월 25일까지 일본현대미술의 차세대 대표주자로 주목 받고 있는 미스터 (Mr., 1969 ~ )의 개인전을 개최합니다.

타카시 무라카미, 요시토모 나라로 대표되는 재팬팝(Japan pop)의 계보를 잇는 미스터(Mr.)는 애니매이션이나 망가에 집착하는 일본 현대인들의 오타쿠 (Otaku) 문화와 롤리타 콤플렉스 등 일본 현대사회를 대변하는 문화코드를 작품 속에서 다루고 있는 작가입니다.

무라카미가 창시한 스튜디오인 카이카이키키 (KaiKai KiKi Ltd.)의 소속작가인 Mr. (1969- )는 무라카미 스튜디오의 어시스턴트로 출발하여 아야 다카노(Aya Takano), 치호 아오시마(Chiho Aoshima) 등과 함께 무라카미의 뒤를 이을 네오제페니즘(Neo Japanism)의 대표 작가들로 주목 받으며 파리와 뉴욕을 중심으로 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있습니다.

매일 물건을 구매한 후 받는 평범한 영수증의 뒷면에 만화 형식의 여자아이를 드로잉하고 그것들을 모아 전시한 것으로 현대미술계에 자신의 존재를 알리기 시작한 미스터는 특징적인 캐릭터 인물과 팝(pop-art) 색채로 자신만의 예술세계를 창조해 오고 있습니다. 커다란 눈과 검은 머리를 한 순수한 얼굴의 소녀와 소년이 등장하는 Mr. 의 그림은 평면적인 색채와 특징적인 캐릭터 스타일의 인물로 재팬 팝과 애니메이션의 영향을 반영하고 있는데, 무라카미를 위시한 재팬팝을 대표하는 이러한 특징적인 만화 스타일의 그림과 팝아트를 접목하는 형식은 이제 무라카미는 물론 그의 뒤를 잇는 젊은 작가들과 일본현대미술의 빼놓을 수 없는 하나의 양식이 되었습니다. 

다양한 문화기호와 코드가 다층적으로 반영되어 있는 Mr.의 작품은 일본 현대 사회 속에 내재되어 있는 하위문화(subculture)에 대해 주목하고 이를 현대의 초상으로 다루고 있습니다. 오늘 나의 모습이며, 현대일본사회의 초상이기도 한 Mr.의 작품세계는 롤리타 콤플렉스와 오타쿠 문화를 깊이 있게 다루고 있음을 알 수 있는데, 대중적이면서 대표적인 시각언어로 오늘 우리의 초상을 끈질기게 탐구하는 동시에 순수한 이상적 세계를 그리고 있는 작가 Mr.의 작품에 등장하는 인물은 롤리타에스크(Lolita-esque, 러시아 출신 소설가 블라디미르 나보코프의 소설'롤리타(Lolita)'에서 비롯되었으며 성인 남성이 미성숙한 소녀에 대해 갖는 성적호기심 또는 매력을 말한다.) 감성과 만화, 애니메이션, 공상과학소설 그리고 비디오 게임 등에 빠진 남성들에 의해 1970년대 일본에서 생겨나기 시작한 오타쿠 문화를 함축하고 있습니다. 

세계적인 현대미술가 타카시 무라카미에 의해 발굴된 미스터는 1996년 도쿄 소케이 대학에서 미술을 전공하였고, 1995년 이후부터 타카시 무라카미 미술조직인 카이카이키키에서 소속되어 주요작가로 활동해 오고 있습니다. 그의 작품은 미국 및 유럽의 미술관과 개인 소장자에 소장되어 있으며, 2006년에는 리용 현대미술관에서 아야 타카노, 치호 아오시마 등과 함께 초대되어 전시를 갖기도 하는 등 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있습니다. 국내 첫 개인전이자 미술관을 제외한 갤러리 전시로는 가장 큰 규모의 전시로 준비되는 이번 리안갤러리 Mr. 전시는 길이가 6미터에 달하는 회화작품을 비롯하여 대형조각 작품인 'Strawberry Voice', 영상작업 'Nobody Dies' 와 더불어 드로잉, 판화, 사진 등 작가의 작품세계를 총체적으로 볼 수 있는 소중한 기회가 될 것입니다. 양 갈래 머리를 한 두상작품인 '스트로베리 보이스 (Strawberry Voice)' 는 2007년 제작된 작품으로 드로잉, 회화, 조각, 영상에 이르는 작가의 다양한 작품세계를 하나로 응축해서 보여주고 있는 작품으로, 순수한 인물의 눈동자에 비치는 세계와 조각의 내부를 가득 채우고 있는 오브제들은 작가의 기억과 상상의 근원이 되는 세계를 보여주는 대표작입니다.
