NEW WORK BY DZINE

Splendid colors, unique patterns, repetitively appearing petalsand cloud-like radial type forms along with surface effect of glittering crystal are visual languages through which artist Dzine (1970 - ) assures himself to others. The primary color images that fill the screens all-over make us feel Kitsch sensitivity and remind us of the reminiscence of the Pop Art in 60-70s. Artist Dzine who works in Chicago has been creating his unique world.

Introduced for the first time in Korea, Dzine—same pronunciation as design— had made himself known as a graffiti artist long ago. Dzine who spent his childhood in a rich music environment in which father was a 'Salsa musician' and his brother introduced 'house music' to him had been close to naturally but came to run deep into the attraction of painting rather than music. Having started painting at the age of 13, he began drawing murals freely on whatever he can express himself whether it was the walls of buildings or trains with the wild urban environment of Chicago as background inspired by intense aesthetic shock and cultural directness of New York graffiti movement in 70-80s. His name as a graffiti painter soon had been known but he changed himself from the street artist to one who hangs his pictures in galleries in 1990s. He shows various talents as an artist, by his activities not only as a painter who draws pictures but also an owner of record company that makes experimental albums and cooperative works with fashion designers. In addition, his interests and activities in these various fields are the clue to understand his various artistic and cultural backgrounds that can be found in his works discussed in the following.

Dzine draws light with colors and draws forms with light. Various spellbinding colors and decorative complicated forms at a glance that remind us of Baroque art in seem to focus on immediate and intense visual attentions first rather than appealing sensitive part in sense or revealing serious themes. His paintings that pursue explorations of new aesthetic objects through the parallel arrangement of heterogeneous forms and the contrast of complementary colors are full of energy, which maintains strict geometrical forms without losing their delicacy. And, planarity's challenge against illusion rather evokes optical illusion phenomenon by even more bold collision of color planes and simple forms with clear outline are rather changed into formless abstract one after repetitions and proliferations on screen. And he seems to seek for a new possibility of painting through his own itinerary in which he seeks for the answer for the fundamental questions of painting.

This Exhibition in LEEAHN Gallery plans to exhibit the artist's new paintings and works centering around custom-made low-rider bike. His custom-made low-rider bike which are always designed newly for each exhibition will be ornated with 24K gold, silver and Swarovski crystals, putting on decoratively carved patterns and displayed on the mirror platform which was specially ordered and manufactured. The artist's bike that remind us of Chicano Low-rider culture(one in which decorating bicycle and motorbike, etc. with their own taste ) which threaded the streets along with Punk culture seem to combine with sculpture, painting and different traditions just like his paintings do. 

The works of Artist Dzine, who reach out to us with uncommon colors and forms, incorporate his curiosity about cultural background and sensitivity as various as their unfamiliarity. Pop art and op-art, Latin American and American cultures, East and West, High culture and subculture and fine art and commercial design are the origins of inspiration and cultural backgrounds of the art of artist Dzine. The artist who absorbs various cultures and histories quickly and turns them into works, draws out encounters with inharmonious things through hybridization with or parallel suggestion of different cultures he has experienced. And, we meet with visual images and signs rather than explanations, and senses and tastes rather than concepts in his works mixing these two heterogeneous elements. 

What are we seeing in his works in which we cannot know what he has drawn, what he is trying to say at a glance? It seems his new gaze and proposal for beauty, what he suggests to us today after he has been through hard creation process. The artworks of Dzine which make us feel as if watching collision and mixture of Kitsch and avant-garde show inquiry on beauty the new colors and forms, he believes and creates, make while betraying preconception about beauty familiar to us and vague expectations for narrative in works of art. In addition, we seem to watch 'the third eye,' a new gaze that the artist tries to find for things and the world beyond the nostalgia and reinterpretation for the things that have been in the past and are now in his attitude like this. The artist's new gaze at and challenge against traditional matters and themes in art, at the same time, seem to require us a new eye, too. We hope that the art of artist Dzine full of witty expressions and curiosity, so full of question mark rather than exclamation point will have question mark and exclamation point of life at the same time as time goes by. Also, we hope that he will have the new eye, the third eye he has tried to find.

NEW WORKS BY DZINE  

화려한 색채와 독특한 패턴 그리고 반복적으로 등장하는 꽃잎과 구름을 닮은 방사형 형상은 크리스탈의 반짝이는 표면효과와 함께 작가 '디자인 (Dzine 1970- )'을 인식시키는 시각언어다. 올오버로 화면을 채우고 있는 원색의 이미지들은 키치적 감성을 느끼게 하고 더불어 60-70년대 팝 아트의 향수를 떠올리게 한다. 시카고에서 활동 중인 작가 '디자인'은 이렇게 자신의 고유한 예술세계를 만들어 가고 있다. 

국내 미술인들에게 처음 소개되는 작가 '디자인 (Dzine-발음은 design과 같다)'은 일찍이 그래피티 화가로 자신을 알렸다. '살사뮤지션 (Salsa musician)'이셨던 아버지와 '하우스음악 (house music)'을 알게 해 준 그의 형 등 풍부한 음악적 환경 속에서 어린 시절을 보낸 디자인은 자연스럽게 음악과 가까웠지만 음악보다는 그림의 매력에 깊이 빠져들었다. 13살부터 그림을 그리기 시작한 그는 70-80년대 뉴욕 그래피티 운동에서 보여지는 강렬한 미적 충격과 문화적 직접성으로부터 영감을 받으며 시카고의 거친 도시환경을 배경으로 빌딩의 벽면과 지하철 등 자신을 표현할 수 있는 곳이라면 어디든 거침없이 그림을 그려가기 시작하였다. 그래피티 화가로서의 그의 이름은 곧 알려지게 되었지만 1990년대를 지나며 그는 거리의 화가에서 전시장에 자신의 그림을 거는 작가로 변신을 하였다. 그는 단지 그림을 그리는 화가로서만이 아니라 실험적인 앨범을 만드는 레코드회사 소유자로, 패션 디자이너와의 협업 등 예술가로서의 다양한 재능을 보여주고 있다. 작가의 이러한 여러 분야에 대한 관심과 활동은 앞으로 살펴볼 그의 작품 속에서 발견할 수 있는 다양한 예술적 문화적 배경을 이해하는 단서가 되고 있다.

'디자인'은 색으로 빛을 그리고, 빛으로 형상을 그린다. 시선을 사로잡는 형형색색의 색채와 일견 바로크미술을 떠올리게 하는 장식적인 복잡한 형상들은 감성의 예민한 부분에 호소하거나 무거운 주제를 드러내기 보다 즉각적이고 강렬한 시각적인 주목에 우선 집중하는 듯하다. 서로 이질적인 형상의 병렬과 보색의 대비를 통해 새로운 미적 대상에 대한 탐색을 추구하는 작가의 회화는 변화무쌍한 에너지로 가득한데, 엄격한 기하학적 형상을 유지하면서 그 섬세함을 잃지 않는다. 회화의 평면성에 대한 일루전에의 도전은 오히려 더욱 과감한 단색면들의 충돌로 시각적 착시 현상을 불러일으키고 단순하고 윤곽이 뚜렷한 형상은 화면위로 반복과 증식을 거듭하면서 오히려 비형상의 추상화면으로 바뀌어 간다. 그리고 이렇게 회화의 근본적인 물음에 대한 답을 구하는 자신만의 여정을 통해 새로운 회화의 가능성을 찾아가고 있는 듯 하다.

이번 리안갤러리 전시에서는 작가의 신작페인팅과 커스텀메이트 로우라이더 바이크 (Custom made low-rider bike)를 위주로 한 작품을 선보일 예정이다. 매 전시마다 새롭게 디자인되는 작가의 커스텀메이드 로우라이더 바이크는 24K 골드와 실버 그리고 스와로브스키 크리스탈과 더불어 장식적으로 새겨진 문양을 입고 특별히 주문 제작된 미러플렛폼 (mirror platform) 위에 놓여지게 된다. 펑크 문화와 함께 거리를 누볐던 
80년대 chicano lowrider culture (자전거, 오토바이 등을 자신만의 취향으로 화려하게 장식한 뒤 무리를 지어 천천히 도시의 거리를 누비는 문화를 말한다.)를 떠올리게 하는 작가의 바이크 작품은 페인팅과 마찬가지로 조각과 회화 그리고 서로 다른 전통과의 결합을 꾀하고 있는 듯 하다. 

일상적이지 않은 색채와 형상으로 우리에게 손을 내미는 작가 '디자인'의 작업은 그 낯설음 만큼이나 다양한 문화적 배경과 감성에 대한 작가의 호기심을 담고 있다. 팝아트와 옵아트, 라틴아메리카와 미국문화, 동양과 서양, 고급문화와 하급문화 그리고 순수미술과 디자인 등 서로 상반되는 이질적인 영역들은 작가 '디자인'의 예술의 영감의 원천이자 문화적 배경이다. 다양한 문화와 역사를 빠르게 흡수하고 또 작업으로 끌어내는 작가는 그가 경험하였던 서로 다른 문화들과의 이종교배 또는 병렬적 제시 또는 통합을 통해 서로 어울리지 않는 것들과의 대면을 이끌어낸다. 그리고 이러한 이질적인 두 요소를 자신의 작업속에서 과감하게 혼용하는 작가의 작업에서 우리는 설명보다는 시각 이미지와 기호를, 개념보다는 감각과 취향을 먼저 만나게 된다. 언뜻 보아서는 무엇을 그린 것인지, 무엇을 말하려는 것인지 알기 어려운 '디자인'의 작업에서 우리는 무엇을 보고 있는 것일까? 작가가 지난한 창작의 과정을 모두 거치며 오늘의 우리에게 제시하고자 하는 것, 그것은 미에 대한 작가의 새로운 시선 그리고 제안이 아닐까 한다. 키치와 아방가르드의 충돌과 혼합을 보는 것 같은 '디자인'의 예술은 우리에게 익숙한 아름다움에 대한 선입견, 미술작품 속 내러티브에 대한 막연한 기대를 외면하고 그러나 자신이 믿는 그리고 창조하는 새로운 색채와 형상이 만들어내는 미-아름다움 대한 탐구를 보여주고 있다. 그리고 이러한 작가의 태도에서 우리는 과거나 현재에 존재했던 것들에 대한 향수와 재해석을 넘어 사물과 세상에 대해 작가가 찾고자 하는 새로운 시선, '제3의 눈'을 보는 것 같다. 미술의 전통적 소재와 주제에 대한 작가의 새로운 시선과 도전은 동시에 우리에게도 새로운 눈을 요구하고 있다. 한가지 덧붙이자면 재치 있는 표현과 호기심으로 충만한 그래서 느낌표보다는 물음표로 가득한 작가 '디자인'의 예술이 시간이 쌓여갈수록 삶의 물음표와 느낌표를 함께 갖는 예술이 되기를 기대한다. 더불어 그가 찾고자 하는 새로운 시선, 제3의 눈으로 온전히 세상을 바라볼 수 있게 되기를 기대한다.
