리안갤러리 대구는 2025년 3월 7일부터 4월 22일까지 이진우 작가의 개인전 «4ème • 물, Quatrième • eau» (이하 «네 번째 • 물»)을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2025년을 여는 첫 기획이자, 리안갤러리에서 선보이는 작가의 두 번째 개인전이다. 이진우 작가는 한지, 숯, 먹 등 한국적인 재료를 활용해 독창적인 조형성과 행위성을 구축해 왔으며, 이번 전시에서는 드로잉과 설치 작품을 포함한 20여 점의 작업을 통해 ‘물과 생명의 흐름’을 다각도로 보여줄 예정이다.

«네 번째 • 물»은 작가가 오랜 시간 연구해 온 물과 존재의 순환에 대한 탐구를 집약한 전시다. 창작 과정에서 흙, 종이, 천, 숯을 주요 매체로 삼아 온 그는, 각 재료를 통해 생성과 소멸, 변화와 순환이라는 생명의 흐름을 조형적으로 표현해 왔다. 흙은 물을 머금으며 생명을 틔우고, 종이는 물과 만나 흐트러지고 사라지며, 천은 물을 흡수한 뒤에도 형태를 유지하며 유연하게 변화한다. 그리고 숯은 불을 거쳐 탄생하고, 물과 만나 정화된다.

이번 전시는 1985년 독일 슈타인푸르트에서 발표한 전시에서 시작된 ‘네 번째 물’에 대한 탐구를 확장한 기획으로 당시 작가는 메마른 땅에 내리는 비를 보며, 물이 흙을 적시고 부드럽게 변화시키는 순간을 ‘생성(生)’의 과정으로 바라보았다. 전시장에 직접 씨앗을 뿌리고 물을 주는 작업을 진행했던 작가는 이후 파리에서도 같은 방식으로 물을 통한 생명의 흐름을 지속적으로 탐구해 왔다. 이번 전시에서도 숯 작업 위에 뿌려진 씨앗이 전시 기간 자연스럽게 움트고 소멸하는 모습을 통해, 생명의 순환을 공간 속에서 직접 경험할 수 있도록 한다.

생명은 탄생과 동시에 필연적으로 소멸을 향해 나아간다. 1992년 프랑스 팡탱에서 ‘종이’ 작업을 선보이며, 물과 만나 쉽게 흐트러지고 마르면 찢어지는 종이를 통해 존재의 부재와 ‘소멸(死)’을 형상화했다. 물이 지나간 자리에는 흔적만이 남으며, 이는 시간 속에서 점차 사라지는 인간의 삶과도 맞닿아 있다. 이러한 작업을 통해 작가는 물의 흔적과 소멸이 지닌 의미를 깊이 성찰했다.

2012년 파리에서 ‘천’과 물의 관계를 연구하며 천이 물을 머금으며 유연하게 변화하는 모습을 통해 생명의 회복과 순환을 보았다. 천은 종이와 달리 물을 흡수한 뒤에도 형태를 유지하며, 흐름을 따라 끊임없이 움직인다. 이는 상실을 지나 다시 살아나는 ‘소생(甦)’의 과정이며, 생명이 끊임없이 새로운 방식으로 되살아나는 자연의 섭리를 상징한다.

이번 전시를 위해 새롭게 제작한 작품 ‘甦(깨어날 소)’는 불과 물을 매개로 변화하는 존재의 본질을 깊이 되새기도록 한다. 이진우 작가의 작업에서 주요한 재료인 ‘숯’은 불을 거쳐 탄생하고, 물과 만나 정화되는 과정을 거친다. 작가는 한지를 한 겹씩 덮고 쇠솔로 두드리는 반복적인 행위를 통해, 숯을 통해 존재의 깊이를 ‘사색(思)’한다. 불과 물이 지나간 자리에는 새로운 여지가 남아 있으며, 이는 깊은 내면으로 향하는 생명의 탐구로 이어진다.

작가는 수십 번 한지를 덮고 비우는 과정에서 잡념과 생각을 내려놓으며 무한한 자유를 경험한다고 말한다. 그렇게 탄생한 작품들은 관람객들에게도 심연의 바다나 하늘과 땅을 바라보는 듯한 묵상적인 경험을 제공한다. «네 번째 • 물»이라는 전시 제목은 흙, 종이, 천을 거쳐 숯과 만나게 되는 과정, 즉 작가의 오랜 여정에서 네 번째로 마주한 물과의 관계를 의미한다. 생성에서 소멸로, 소생에서 사색으로 이어지는 이번 전시는 자연과 존재의 순환을 조형적으로 탐구하며, 물과 생명의 흐름 속에서 존재의 의미를 되새기는 시간을 마련한다. 물은 흐르고, 씨앗은 깨어난다.

About artist

이진우 작가는 1959년 서울에서 태어나 1983년 프랑스로 건너가 파리 8대학과 파리 국립 고등미술학교에서 조형미술학과 미술 재료학을 전공했다. 이후 현재까지 파리를 기반으로 활발하게 작업하고 있다. 특히 7년간 프랑스에서 미술 재료학을 연구하며, 작품을 구성하는 재료의 본질과 물성에 깊은 관심을 가져왔다.

그의 작업은 세계 여러 미술관과 갤러리에서 지속적으로 소개되고 있다. 중국 상하이 롱뮤지엄의 10주년 기념전, 도쿄의 동경화랑 전시 등 다양한 해외 전시에 참여했으며, 아시아 소사이어티 파리, 화이트 큐브 홍콩, 상하이 바오롱 미술관 등에서도 개인전을 열었다. 앞으로도 도쿄, 홍콩, 베이징, 휴스턴 등에서의 개인전이 예정되어 있으며, 끊임없는 탐구를 바탕으로 물성과 존재에 대한 깊은 사유를 확장해 나가고 있다.

 

Leeahn Gallery Daegu will host the solo exhibition "4ème • Water, Quatrième • Eau" (hereafter "The Fourth • Water") by artist Lee Jin Woo from March 7 to April 22, 2025. This exhibition marks the gallery’s first exhibition of the year and the artist’s second solo show at Leeahn Gallery. Known for his unique sculptural and performative approach using traditional Korean materials such as hanji (Korean paper), charcoal, and ink, Lee Jin Woo presents around 20 works, including drawings and installations, that explore the flow of water and life from multiple perspectives.

"The Fourth • Water" is a culmination of the artist’s long-standing exploration of water and the cyclical nature of existence. Over time, Lee has worked with four key materials—earth, paper, fabric, and charcoal—each embodying different stages of creation, dissolution, transformation, and regeneration. Earth absorbs water and nurtures life; paper dissolves and disappears when it meets water; fabric retains its form while flexibly responding to water; and charcoal, born from fire, is purified through water.

This exhibition expands on Lee’s ongoing investigation of "The Fourth Water", which began with a 1985 exhibition in Steinfurt, Germany. There, the artist observed rain falling on parched land, witnessing how water softens the earth and creates the foundation for new life—an act of "birth (生)". During that exhibition, he planted seeds and watered them within the space, a practice he continued in Paris, furthering his study of water’s role in sustaining life. In this exhibition, seeds scattered over charcoal works will naturally sprout and wither throughout the exhibition period, allowing visitors to experience the cycle of life within the space itself.

Life, from the moment of birth, inevitably moves toward dissolution. In 1992, in Pantin, France, Lee explored paper as a medium, illustrating absence and "death (死)" through the fragile and ephemeral nature of paper, which easily disintegrates upon contact with water. The traces left behind by water evoke the passage of time and the transient nature of human existence. Through these works, the artist deeply contemplates the impermanence of life and the marks left by water.

In 2012, in Paris, Lee revisited the relationship between fabric and water. Unlike paper, fabric absorbs water while retaining its structure, continuously shifting and adapting to its environment. This symbolizes the process of "resuscitation (甦)"—the way life, even after loss, finds new ways to emerge and renew itself.

For this exhibition, Lee presents a newly created work titled "甦 (So, meaning 'to awaken')." The piece reflects on the fundamental transformation of existence through the elements of fire and water. In his work, charcoal, a key material, is forged in fire and later undergoes a cleansing process through water. The artist repeatedly layers hanji and strikes it with a metal brush, engaging in a meditative act that deepens his reflection on existence ("思"). The space left behind by fire and water suggests new possibilities, guiding the viewer toward an introspective exploration of life’s cycles.

Through the repetitive act of layering and erasing hanji, Lee experiences absolute freedom, releasing all thoughts and distractions. The resulting works invite viewers to enter a meditative state, evoking the depths of the sea, the vast sky, or the boundless earth. The title "The Fourth • Water" signifies the artist’s journey through earth, paper, and fabric, now arriving at charcoal’s encounter with water. From birth to dissolution, from renewal to contemplation, this exhibition visually explores the cyclical nature of existence, offering a moment to reflect on water, life, and the passage of time. Water flows, and the seeds awaken.
