"She lives in the blurry world where images can come from anywhere and where most of our experience, even with paintings, comes from reproductions, which have somehow desensitized our experience of the physical world. Elizabeth brings us to the experience of a deeper, more intense reality – this very physical world which we have tended to forget. It is in the physical world that we love, that we feel pain, that we interact: writing can somehow be digitalized – typing on a computer, even speaking to an App that then turns your voice into a text – but painting, hardly. Or at least it is embedded within the actuality of the material. When looking at the perfect world of Elizabeth Peyton, we are not looking at photographs: we are looking at a perfect image made from so many brushstrokes over four decades now. All of this is material. All of this is physical. And exists somewhere else too.”

Elizabeth Peyton’s new body of work includes the concerns of love, intimacy, and time passing with a heightened awareness of the interconnectedness of life.

An inspiration for the show came from the films of Wong Kar-wai – his way of turning one of the most painful things – loss – the loss of love or sometimes impossibility of connection, into beauty – in one way making a place to experience these feelings and soothe them at the same time.

Elizabeth Peyton (b. 1965, Danbury, Connecticut) lives and works in New York, where she obtained a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York (1987). Peyton has exhibited internationally, with significant solo exhibitions including those at UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2020); National Portrait Gallery, London (2019); The French Academy in Rome, Villa Medici, Rome (2017); Gallery Met, Metropolitan Opera, New York (2016); Staatliche Kunsthalle, Baden-Baden (2013); Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, USA (2011); New Museum, New York (2008), which toured internationally to Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, and the Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht.

Her work is also held in major collections that among others include the Burger Collection, Hong Kong; Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA), Pittsburgh (PA); Centre National d' Art et de Culture Georges-Pompidou, Paris; Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel; Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg; Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston (MA); Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York (NY); New Museum, New York (NY); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), San Francisco (CA); and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (NY).

페이튼의 신작은 사랑과 친밀감 그리고 시간이 지날수록 깊이 깨닫게 되는 삶의 상호 연결성에 관한 것이다.

이번 전시는 사랑의 상실이나 때때로 이루어질 수 없는 관계와 같은 가장 고통스러운 감정을 우리가 경험케 하고 그것을 아름답게 보듬어 주는 왕가위의 영화들로부터 영감을 받았다.

엘리자베스 페이튼은 1965년 코네티컷주 댄버리에서 태어나 1987년 뉴욕 시각 예술 학교를 졸업한 후 현재 뉴욕에 거주하며 활동 중이다. 페이튼은 전세계 주요 미술관에서 개인전을 개최해왔다. 대표적인 기관으로는 베이징 UCCA 현대미술센터(2020), 런던 국립 초상화 갤러리(2019), 로마 프랑스 아카데미(2017), 메트로폴리탄 오페라 극장 갤러리(2016), 바덴바덴 카를스루에 주립 미술관(2013), 미국 밀드레드 레인 켐퍼 미술관(2011) 등이 있으며, 뉴욕 뉴뮤지엄에서 열린 대규모 회고전(2008)은 미니애폴리스의 워커 아트 센터, 런던 화이트채플 갤러리, 마스트리흐트 보네판테 미술관에서 순회전을 거쳤다.

그녀의 작품은 홍콩 버거 컬렉션, 피츠버그 카네기 미술관, 파리 조르주 퐁피두센터, 독일 볼프스부르크 시립미술관, 보스턴 미술관, 뉴욕 현대미술관, 뉴뮤지엄, 휘트니 미술관, 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 등 전세계 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.
