Leeahn Gallery Daegu will present a 15th anniversary sculpture collection exhibition from 18 March to 30 April 2021, bringing together sculptures by world-renowned artists. This exhibition, featuring works by 16 artists including Sarah Lucas, Urs Fischer, Tracey Emin, and Joel Shapiro, encompasses a variety of styles, from pop art-like sculptures made using everyday objects to works that focus on quietly bringing out the inherent properties of the materials. Through this collection exhibition, you will have the opportunity to see in one place the extensive collection of Leeahn Gallery, which has been steadily exhibiting works by leading international artists.

 

Sarah Lucas, who was a member of the Young British Artists (YBA) in the 1990s and emerged as a leading figure in British contemporary art after being introduced to an exhibition with Damien Hirst in 1988, is an artist known for her unique rebellious and provocative works. Her work TBD, a plastic toilet, which is introduced in this exhibition, uses transparent plastic as the material for the toilet bowl, revealing a bold challenge to the private area and a spirit of rejection of conventional wisdom.

 

Joel Shapiro, a master of contemporary sculpture who has been active for 40 years on the global stage, is considered an artist who has pushed the possibilities of form to the extreme. Joel Shapiro's Untitled, which will be unveiled at the exhibition, uses only simple, geometric forms to create a rhythm and liveliness that no one would have expected. Despite the fact that the sculpture, which has a modern composition that overwhelms the empty space, is made only of straight lines, it gives the impression of capturing a moment of a living organism in a photograph.

 

One of the main concerns of Urs Fischer, a contemporary artist of Swiss origin who is based and active in New York, is the texture and shape revealed in the process of creating and destroying matter. The work presented in this exhibition, Small man on pile (2014), also reveals the process of de-morphologising of brass covered with silver foil from its original form in this context. His work, which depicts metal materials as if they were soft candles melting, offers a reflection on the inevitability of existence, which wears out, transforms, and disappears over time.

 

Tracey Emin, a member of the Young British Artists (YBA) and a Turner Prize nominee for her representative work My Bed (1998), is known as an artist who boldly exposes her life through various media. The title of Emin's work presented in this exhibition, The Heart Has Its Reasons, is quoted from Blaise Pascal saying that "The heart has its own reasons that reason knows not. We know the truth not only through reason but also through the heart." Emin borrowed the subject matter of the character from Antonio Canova's Psyche and Cupid (1793) collected in the Louvre Museum.

 

The 15th anniversary sculpture collection exhibition at the Leeahn Gallery provides an opportunity to compare and appreciate works by renowned international artists in various styles, including pop art, minimalism, and expressionism, all in one place. Leeahn Gallery, which is expected to make further leaps in the future, aims to reestablish its identity as a substantial gallery through this 15th anniversary exhibition. 대구 리안갤러리는 2021년 3월 18일부터 4월 30일까지 세계적인 작가들의 조각 작품을 한데 모은 15주년 기념 조각 소장전을 선보인다. 사라 루카스, 우르스 피셔, 트레이시 에민, 조엘 샤피로를 비롯한 총 16명 작가의 작품들로 구성된 이번 전시는 일상의 사물을 사용하여 제작한 팝 아트적 조각부터 묵묵히 재료에 내재한 물성을 끄집어내는데 집중한 작업까지 다양한 양식을 아우른다. 이번 소장품 전시를 통해 해외 유수의 작가들의 전시를 꾸준히 진행해 온 리안갤러리의 넓은 컬렉션을 한 자리에서 감상하는 기회를 가질 수 있다.

 

90년대 YBA(Young British Artists 영 브리티시 아티스츠)의 일원으로 왕성하게 활동하였고, 1988년 데미언 허스트와 함께 전시에 소개되며 영국 현대미술의 주역으로 떠오른 사라 루카스(Sarah Lucas)는 특유의 반항적이고 도발적인 작업으로 잘 알려진 작가이다. 이번 전시에서 소개되는 그의 작품 플라스틱 변기 〈TBD〉는 투명한 플라스틱을 변기의 재료로 사용하여 사적인 영역에 대한 과감한 도전과 통념에 대한 거부 정신을 드러낸다.

 

전세계를 무대로 40년간 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 현대 조각계의 거장 조엘 샤피로(Joel Shapiro)는 형상의 가능성을 극한의 경지로 끌어올린 아티스트라는 평가를 받는다. 이번 전시에서 공개되는 조엘 샤피로의 작품 〈Untitled〉는 단순하고도 기하학적인 형태만을 사용해 누구도 예상하지 못했던 리듬감과 생동감을 이끌어낸다. 빈 공간을 압도하는 모던한 구성의 조각은 직선적으로만 이루어짐에도 불구하고 마치 사진으로 살아있는 생명체의 한 순간을 포착한 듯한 인상을 준다.

 

뉴욕을 기반으로 활발히 활동하는 스위스 출생의 현대 작가 우르스 피셔(Urs Fischer)의 주요 관심사 중 하나는 물질을 창조하고 파괴하는 과정에서 드러나는 질감과 형상에 있다. 이번 전시에 제시된 작품 〈Small man on pile〉(2014) 역시 이러한 맥락 속에서 은박을 입힌 황동이 기존의 형체로부터 탈-형상화하는 과정을 드러낸다. 금속 소재를 마치 부드러운 양초가 녹아 내리는듯한 모습으로 묘사한 그의 작품은 물리적 형체를 지닌 이상 시간의 흐름 속에서 필연적으로 닳고, 변형되어 소멸 될 수 밖에 없는 존재의 숙명에 대한 고찰을 안겨준다.

 

YBA(영 브리티시 아티스츠)의 일원이자, 대표작 '나의 침대'(1998)를 통해 터너상 후보로도 지명되었던 트레이시 에민(Tracey Emin)은 다양한 매체를 통해 자신의 삶을 거침없이 폭로하는 작가로 유명하다. 이번 전시에 제시된 에민의 작품 제목〈The Heart Has Its Reasons〉는 “마음은 이성(reason)이 알지 못하는 마음만의 이유(reasons)가 있다. 우리는 진실을 이성만으로가 아니라 마음을 통해 안다.”라는 블레이즈 파스칼의 말을 인용하였다. 에민은 이 작품에 루브르 미술관에 소장된 안토니오 카바노의〈프시케와 큐피드〉(1793)의 인물 소재를 차용하였다.

 

리안갤러리의 이번 15주년 기념 조각 소장품전은 팝 아트, 미니멀리즘, 표현주의 등 다양한 양식의 명망있는 해외 작가들의 작품들을 한 자리에서 비교하며 감상할 수 있는 자리를 마련한다. 앞으로 더욱 새로운 도약이 기대되는 리안갤러리는 이번 15주년 기념 전시를 통해 다시금 내실있는 갤러리로서의 정체성을 자리매김하고자 한다. 전시는 3월 18일부터 4월 30일까지 진행된다.
