Leeahn Gallery is pleased to announce Line in Space, Tchun-Mo Nam’s solo exhibition that will be on view at the Daegu location. This is his fourth solo exhibition at the gallery so far, subsequently following the major solo exhibition at Ludwig Museum in Koblenz. Works on display reflect how Nam has constantly explored the area of relief painting via usage of the motif of lines, ranging from painting to sculpture. 

 

Nam has experimented in various ways in order to articulate space with only line itself. This exhibition presents 24 new works including paintings that portray the concept of strokes within space and how they expand throughout, along with a large installation piece. While the existing “sculpture-painting” aimed to depict the spatial relationship between line and light, paintings that are newly introduced express the space in which lines are intertwined on the canvas. 

 

The artist aspires to show the purity of painting through the use of lines, as his work derives from the investigation of the origin of painting. Considering that Nam was inspired by the ways in which artists from his previous generations depicted blank space through lines, he bestows meaning to it as an independent component. As the exhibition title suggests, Nam explores how lines transform within space by placing assorted lines in the area. 

 

In the Stroke Lines series (2020), a thick straight line was expressed in a concise form as multiple lines overlapped with each other, while the enlarged plaid pattern was mixed up in diverse colors and sizes. Moreover, traces of paint left as a result of lines that Nam drew at once enrich the overall frame. 

 

For the Lines series (2019) that is displayed on second floor, each work is a collage of pieces of fabric that are colored and cut. Nam constructs a sense of space by repeatedly sticking cotton cloth pieces on the canvas, therefore embodying the plaid framework. He naturally leaves bumps in the process, which adds not only an unexpected aspect to the artwork but also a rhythmical sense. 

 

This exhibition features sculpture and drawing works along with those on flat surface. In addition, the installed sculpture (2020) that mainly deals with curved lines shows the spatial relationship that the artist has mapped out. As such, Line in Space exhibition will shed light on the issue of painting and of objectivity within space that Nam has constantly pondered upon. 
 

 

 

리안갤러리 대구는 2020년 11월 19일부터 12월 31일까지 남춘모 작가의 개인전 《Line in Space》를 개최한다. 남춘모는 회화부터 조형에 이르기까지 ‘선’이라는 모티브를 이용해 폴리코트와 광목을 사용한 부조 회화라는 독특한 영역을 개척해 왔다. 이번 전시는 독일 코블렌츠 루드비히 미술관에서 대규모 개인전을 마치고 열리는 리안갤러리에서의 네 번째 개인전이다.

남춘모는 선 그 자체로 공간을 표현하기 위해 다양한 실험을 해왔다. 이번 전시에서는 대형 설치 조각과 더불어, 공간 속에서의 획의 개념과 그 획들이 확장되어 나아가는 모습을 담은 평면 회화 작품 등 다양한 신작 24점을 선보인다. 기존의 부조 회화가 빛에 따라 변화하는 공간, 즉 선과 빛의 공간적인 관계를 표현하고자 했다면, 이번에 소개되는 페인팅 작업은 캔버스 화면에서 선들이 서로 부딪히며 만들어지는 공간을 나타낸다.

그의 작업은 회화의 근원에 대한 탐구에서 시작되는데, 기본 요소인 선을 통해 회화의 순수성을 보여주고자 한다. 선대작가들의 선을 활용한 여백과 공간을 표현하는 방식에 영감 받았던 남춘모는 선을 하나의 독립적 요소로 보며 그 자체에 의미를 부여한다. 전시 제목 《공간 속에서의 선 Line in Space》에서도 알 수 있듯이, 남춘모는 화면에 다양한 선을 배치하며 선이 공간에서 어떻게 변모해가는지를 탐구한다.

먼저 Stroke Lines(2020)연작에서는 여러 선들이 겹치며 두꺼운 직선이 절제된 형태로 표현되었고, 격자 무늬를 확대하여 크기 및 여러가지 색을 혼용하여 변화를 주면서 단번에 그어진 선이 지나간 자리에는 물감이 흐른 자국이 고스란히 남아있어 더욱 풍부한 화면을 만들어내고 있다.

2층에 전시된 Lines(2019)연작은 천 위에 아크릴 물감으로 채색 후 하나하나 잘라 콜라주로 붙여 완성한 것이다. 캔버스 바탕 위에 광목 천 조각들을 반복적으로 붙여가며 수직과 수평의 격자 골조 패턴을 형성함으로써 화면에 공간감을 구축한다. 작가는 그 과정에서 자연스럽게 요철을 남기는데, 선들은 각기 다르게 표현되며 의도치 않은 또다른 결과물을 낳는다. 이와 더불어 평면 캔버스 위에서 이루어지는 선들의 율동감 마저 느낄 수 있다.

이번 전시에는 평면 작업 외에도 조각 및 드로잉도 설치하였다. 곡선을 주조로 한 설치 조각(2020)은 작가가 구상한 공간의 관계성을 보여주며 결국 이번 전시는 작가가 늘 고민해온 회화의 문제와 공간 속의 사물성 문제를 새롭게 제시하고자 하겠다.
